What is the history of Albany?

English explorer Henry Hudson discovered Albany in 1609. The original inhabitants were Native Americans, but French settlers colonized the area in 1624. Known as the French Walloons, the settlers called the land Fort Orange. By 1629, the Dutch West India company set up a trading post in the area. The Dutch populated and traded in Fort Orange until the English took over in 1664. King Charles II gave Fort Orange to his brother James, the Duke of York and Albany. Fort Orange was then changed to what we know today as Albany. Albany officially became the state's capital in 1797.

How do I get around town?

There are many ways to get around Albany and its surrounding areas. While driving is one mode of transportation, other options include rail and bus services. The Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) offers local bus rides throughout the capital region. The Northway Xpress provides express bus rides back and forth from Saratoga and Albany. The CDTA also offers BusPlus, a bus rapid transit service that caters to few stops. There is an Albany International Airport and an Amtrak rail service, too. Residents can locate the Albany-Rensselaer Rail station just a few miles from downtown Albany.

What is the Albany commute like?

Albany's major highway is I-787. The Adirondack Northway (I-87) and New York State Thruway (I-90) are other major roadways. I-787 is the highway used to travel in and out of downtown Albany. Residents can travel by car to reach Canada taking I-87 from Albany. I-90 will lead travelers toward Buffalo and Boston.

Included in the Plaza are The Farmer's market, New York State museum, The Egg theater, and more. Another landmark that is nearby the Plaza is the New York State Capitol building. The Capitol building is the location for the state's legislature. It was completed in 1899.

What is there to do around Albany?

There is so much that tourists and residents alike can do around Albany. Want to catch a hockey game? Head over to the Times Union Center in downtown Albany to cheer for the Albany Devils. Want to enjoy a day of shopping? Albany's Crossgates Mall offers hundreds of shops and restaurants for anybody. Albany's Lark Street offers a fun and diverse nightlife. Whether relaxing at a wine bar or dancing the night away, there is a place for everyone.

Every spring, Albany celebrates the Tulip Festival. The festival honors the city's Dutch heritage and history. The city also hosts several music festivals. Festivals like Alive at 5 during the summer and the Albany Riverfront Jazz Festival in the fall are free. The New York State Food Festival is another fun festival. It that takes place in Albany and best of all, admission is free.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Albany is at the crossroads of major highways I-87 and I-90. So, there are many fun places to visit outside of the city, and most are just a short drive away from Albany. A visit to the Adirondack mountains in Old Forge, NY offers a fun day at New York's largest water park. The drive is just three short hours away. Saratoga Springs is another excellent choice for a day of leisure and relaxation. Saratoga Springs is only a 30-minute drive away from Albany.
