Burlington was one of the first cities of the Little France colonization in the 1700s. It was home to General Ethan Allen, and many of the historic sites are from this early time frame. One of the first colleges in Burlington was built in 1793. The city is located on beautiful Lake Champlain, is listed as one of Forbes prettiest cities. Although it’s the biggest city in Vermont, the lifestyle is that of Small Town USA.

How is the weather in Burlington?

Burlington has a humid climate. The warm season ranges from late May through mid-September. High temperatures normally peak in the low 80s and low temperatures in the 60s. There is no real dry season due to the amount of forest density. The cold season runs from early December through late March, with high temperatures averaging in the mid-20s, and low temperatures in the teens. Inland, there are rarely temperatures below zero. Substantial snowfall is rare. The annual snowfall averages 83 inches.

How do I get around town?

Traveling in Burlington by car is no problem. There’s ample parking with easy access to shops, theaters and restaurants. Many of the downtown attractions are located on pedestrian-only streets. There’s plenty of public transportation with bus lines going from one end of town to the other. There are also plenty of bike trails, although due to the hilly terrain, it isn’t always the easiest way to go.

What is the Burlington commute like?

Interstate Hwys. 189 and 89 outskirt Burlington. U.S. Routes 2 and 7 give you access in the town limits. Vermont Route 127 is a limited-access highway, giving you access to the North End of the city. Travel within the city itself is easy, although some traffic is limited to pedestrians only. This works well for shopping areas.

What are the local media outlets?

You’ll find a diverse array of media to meet your needs in Burlington. The most popular paper in the area is the Burlington Free Press. Other newspapers include the UVM Vermont Cynic and the Vermont Woman. Local radio station WVPS FM 107.9 keeps you up-to-date on news, business, sports and events in the area.

Burlington’s diverse history offers something for everyone—young and old. Housing in the Burlington area is affordable and plentiful. There are plenty of awesome things to do in and around town. Outdoor recreation is plentiful with bike and hiking trails. Indoor activities include the ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center, the Fleming Museum of Art, or brewery tours. There’s something for everyone in Burlington!

Any annual festivals or Burlington events to know?

The Discover Jazz Festival in early June is a ten-day festival loaded with entertainment, great food and great times for the entire family. If you’re not a music fan, check out the Lake Champlain International Fishing Derby, also in June. Fall festivals include Oktoberfest and the annual Halloween Bike Ride.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Vermont is full of fun things to do. Take advantage of the great activities at Lake Champlain. Rent a paddle boat or take a cruise, visit the maritime museums, or spend the day picnicking on its beautiful shores. There are historical sites close at hand for day trips. Visit Robert Frost’s Homestead near Bennington or visit the Bennington museum. Bike rentals are available to enjoy the stunning countryside.
