Chapel Hill Overview

Chapel Hill is the 16th-largest city in the state of North Carolina, with a population of over a half-million residents. It is one of the three cities that make up the Research Triangle, Durham and Raleigh are the other two cities. In 1959 the three cities were named the Research Triangle Park because of the park between Durham and Raleigh.

What is the history of Chapel Hill?

Chapel Hill sits atop a hill and was originally settled by William Barbee and his family. The family contributed to the then fledgling University of North Carolina. In 1993, Chapel Hill had the opportunity to celebrate its bicentennial and establish the Chapel Hill Museum.

Although it is a college town, it is filled with elegant small shops and restaurants, beautiful parks, and provides an upscale feel to its surroundings. Because Chapel Hill is surrounded by mountains, residents will experience a milder summer heat and cooler winter days. But the residential areas are settled on large woodsy lots which makes residents feel like they are living at a luxury resort.
