Council Bluffs has a long history going back to the early 1800s when Francois Guittar, a businessman from St. Louis, established it as a territory called Traders Point. Iowa became the 29h state in the union in 1846. After that, the territory formerly known as Traders Point was renamed to Kanesville to honor Thomas Kane, who assisted Brigham Young in getting federal permission to use the region as a winter encampment for the Mormons. The town became Council Bluff in 1882 when the majority of the Mormon settlers decided to head west to Utah.
