The Town of Elmira was established in 1792, although its name wasnÆt officially changed from Chemung to Elmira until 1808. The town served as a major hub for transportation with the building of the Chemung Canal. Elmira College, located in the downtown area, was established in 1855 and continues to educate students today.

The average temperatures in summer are in the upper 70s, with July being the hottest month. January is typically the coldest month of the year with an average temperature of 23 degrees. June tends to be the wettest month of the year in Elmira, while March is the windiest.
