" Roanoke was originally called Big Lick when it was established in 1852. The name came because the wildlife was drawn to a part of the Roanoke river which had a large outcropping of salt. Ronake's growth can often be credited to its geographical location. Located midway between Tennessee and Maryland and just west of the Blue Mountains, Roanoke naturally became a major transportation hub."
One of the wonderful things about Roanoke is the climate as residents get to experience the best of all four seasons. The winters months are surprisingly warm with the average temperature being about 48 degrees in December. Roanoke only gets about 21 inches of snow a year. Spring begins in mid-March and Summer you can expect the average temperature to be about 80-90 degrees. Fall is a spectacular time of year when the leaves change.
Many people living in Roanoke do have a car, however, there are also options for people without a vehicle. Residents who use bikes to get around can enjoy free parking spaces in the public parking lots. If you are on foot, the city provides a free trolley called the Starline that will take you around town. If you are flying in and out of Roanoke the airport is just 6km from downtown.
The major roads that will get you in and out of Roanoke are interstate 81 and interstate 581. Roanoke is a major metropolitan area with many people working in the downtown area. You can expect moderate traffic during rush hour times.
If you are looking to stay abreast of the news in the area, many local residents like to turn to the Roanoke Times as their go to newspaper. If you prefer to catch up on local events on the TV then most residents turn on WDBJ7.
One of the beautiful things about living in Roanoke is that you can live in a metropolitan city without giving up the benefits of living next to the Blue Ridge Mountains. In the heart of downtown, you have access to great restaurants, museums, transportation and nightlife. At the same time, Roanoke places a real value on the surrounding nature the area has to offer giving you access to countless outdoor activities. It is really the best of both worlds.
Roanoke is rich in history. The Virginia Museum of Transportation is a popular spot for people to visit to learn the instrumental impact the railroad had on growth in the area. Residents also enjoy strolling across the Martin Luther King Memorial Bridge located downtown.
Residents and visitors can often be found taking advantage of the wonderful hiking trails in Roanoke. In fact, Roanoke was named the best trail town by Blue Ridge Outdoor Magazine. Roanoke residents can also take advantage of the food scene. Restaurants range from the most popular food trucks to breweries to farm-to-table locally sourced restaurants. No matter what your tastes are Roanoke will have a restaurant for you.
Every year residents can look forward to the annual Festival in the Park. This festival has been an annual event every Memorial Day weekend since 1969. Vendors, artists, and performers come from all over to participate. Another festival to enjoy Is the harvest festival which takes place every fall right downtown and includes pumpkin painting and live entertainment.
If you are looking for a mini vacation from Roanoke you don't have to look far. You can head to the Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg that is home to the Virginia's largest indoor waterpark. If you need a grown-up escape the Primland Resort in Meadows of Dan has a lot to offer including horseback riding and golf.
If you love city life then you will want to rent an apartment in the downtown area which will give you access to all the great shopping, restaurants and entertainment. There are many new construction luxury apartments in Roanoke of which have outdoor spaces. If you are looking for a bit more of a historic feel, then Old Southwest District might be for you. You can walk to the downtown but the area has a tight-knit community feel that draws people there. You will find you can get a bit more space in the area compared to downtown.
