Who doesn't love Mardi Gras? The celebratory energy, the decorative masks and floats...and let's not forget the beads! As an apartment-ite living in Akron, Ohio, February's Fat Tuesday celebration may tend to be a bit on the chilly side, likely leaving you content to re-watch 'The Big Easy' from the comfort of your apartment rather than brave a chilly parade. But hold the gumbo, pal, as local nightclub Bourbon Street offers Akron-area apartment-ites the New Orleans experience every night of the week from the comfort and warmth of their party-hearty surroundings.
Truly a hotbed of youthful energy, Bourbon Street is a chameleon-like club as diverse as Mardi Gras itself - one part dance floor, one part whiskey bar, the venue attempts to create the best of both worlds. DJ's spin an energetic and nostalgia-driven mix of new wave, 90's alternative and modern club hits, with the occasional Dr. John tune thrown in for the sake of the atmosphere. Beads are, of course, complimentary every night of the week, with all of the accompanying craziness they imply, although Thursday nights (with their $1 draft beer specials) tend to be the most wild.
Fittingly, the crowd tends to run the gamut from college kids out on the town to the occasional thirty-something recapturing their youth on the dance floor. Hurricanes are fittingly a house specialty drink, although other rum concoctions and a surprisingly diverse beer selection are also available. Sorry, but no alligator bites are to be found on this Bourbon Street, and live music is also in short supply. But then again you've saved yourself some airfare to New Orleans, and on the dance floor no one can do that voodoo that you do, so let Bourbon Street deliver your own personal Big Easy that is just a short commute from most Akron area apartments.
