So you're finally settled in your new Austin apartment, and eager to discover what the notorious 6th Street scene is all about. If you're gonna do it up party-hearty style then you might as well go to the source, and fewer bars encompass 6th street better than the Dizzy Rooster.
The Rooster's biggest claim to fame is its "main hang" title for the cast of MTV's Real World Austin, where all of the drunken debauchery you could handle was broadcast for the world to see. True enough, odds are good you'll see as many people dancing on the bar itself as you will on the always-crowded floor, and 'shots, shots and more shots' seems to be the rallying cry amongst the regulars.
Occasional live music can be found at the Rooster (Dave the One Man Band anyone?), but blasting hip hop, top 40 and reggae is more likely. Open seven nights a week, this Rooster's feathers can get ruffled easily on the weekends, when lines stretch out the door, the wait for a drink at the bar is three deep and the baseball cap-clad dude next to you screaming "WOOOOO!" seems to have lost any degree of volume control. Still, worst case you can run inside and quickly write your name on the infamous ceiling, proving that, at least for a moment, you too were shaking your money maker five feet off the ground.
