Auburn Overview

Auburn is a small city spread out over a 65 square mile area. Its history dates back to the 1700s and makes for interesting reading. The people here tend to be down-to-earth, proportionately liberal and welcoming to newcomers. Although life in Auburn may seem quiet for some, it's just two hours away from Portland and Boston, meaning that those who want a taste of city life don't have far to drive. There are many nice neighborhoods including those consisting primarily of apartment dwellers. So, there's something for everyone in this corner of Maine.

What is the history of Auburn?

Auburn still has a strong industrial backbone that began in the industrial revolution. The area that became Auburn was obtained in the Pejepscot Purchase. A group from Portsmouth in Boston negotiated the treaty and paid for the land. The Treaty of Portsmouth brought peace between the English settlements and Abenaki Indians. In 1736, a large section of land was granted to veterans of the Battle of Quebec, which occurred in 1690. This led to litigation that left the borders and ownership of the land in question for some time to come. In 1786, Auburn was part of Bakerstown, later renamed Poland. Then, it became part of Minot and was incorporated in 1802. The arrival of the Atlantic and St. Lawrence Railroad in 1848 eventually led to the development of a mill town. In the late 19th century, Auburn became is shoe manufacturing center. In fact, the city seal still depicts two spindles. Today, many industries still operate in the city, producing plastic laminates, electrical components and automotive parts, among other products.

Auburn is a great place for snow lovers as it gets 75 inches of snow per year. For those who like warmer temperatures, June, July and August are the most comfortable months. With a comfort index of 6.4, Auburn compares favorably with the rest of Maine.

How do I get around town?

With a walk score of 33, Auburn is not very friendly to foot traffic. Therefore, most people who rent apartments in Auburn also have a vehicle. Public transportation is limited in Auburn. The Lewiston-Auburn Transit Committee (LATC) does provide public bus service between Lewiston and Auburn via the purple bus that serves USM's Lewiston-Auburn College (LAC). Residents can also travel by air by taking a plane from the nearby Auburn-Lewiston Airport, which has served the area since 1935.

What is the Auburn commute like?

To prevent getting turned around within the city, newcomers can stick to the main thoroughfares. Interstate 95 and US Route 202 are major arteries in and out of the city. Alternatively, State Routes 11, 4, 122, 136 and 122 are the fastest way to get around within the city.

What are the local media outlets?

The Lewiston Sun Journal also writes local news for the Auburn area. While residents in Auburn have the usual access to satellite radio if they subscribe, there are also local radio stations in Oakland and Freeport, Maine that reach Auburn listeners. These include Christian stations MWSJ and WMDR. Other FM stations serving a variety of genres include WJBQ and 98.5 FM.

Auburn has just 23,000 residents and appeals to those who like quiet living. This small city has a very diverse population and consists mostly of residents who own their homes. However, there are also apartments available for young professionals and families to put down roots in the city. Auburn and Lewistown are separated by the Androscoggin River and residents can walk back and forth between the towns via the Auburn Riverwalk. the two cities share many services and are often called the Twin Cities of Maine. This unique feature along with the river also make living in Auburn appealing.

What Auburn landmarks should I see?

Lake Auburn and the Auburn Riverwalk are attractive features that draw both tourists and locals. Other landmarks include the Martindale Country Club, Lake Taylor and Mount Apatit. Additionally, the city has a ton of green space and its spread out, so it does not feel as congested as other small cities might.

What is there to do around Auburn?

Despite his small size, Auburn offers a lot to those who live here and those who come to visit. When tourists come to Auburn, they are first attracted to the Riverwalk area, where they can explore eateries, shops and other local venues. The Side by Each Brewery has a wide selection of great beer and potent poutine to try if you dare. Lost Valley has snowboarding and breweries. Additionally, the Community Little Theatre is also a place of local charm and flavor. These are great things to keep in mind while shopping for an apartment in Auburn.

Any annual festivals or Auburn events to know?

The Great Falls Balloon Festival in Lewiston is just across the river from Auburn and a spectacularly good time. The festival occurs every August. The Yarmouth Clam Festival typically occurs every July and it's just a short drive from the city. Additionally, there are local venues that have live music, perhaps in your favorite genre.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

It's a two-hour drive southeast to reach the seaside city of Portland. The picturesque city makes a great vacation spot for those who want to enjoy views of the Atlantic. For those who want a bigger change, vacationing in Boston provides access to museums, cultural events and city life. Just lock up your apartment and hit the road for a no-hassles weekend away.

Where is the best place to move in Auburn?

Stevens Mill is an affluent area of Auburn that also offers apartment living space for those who want to live in an up-and-coming area. The new Auburn neighborhood is a great place for renters because it's largely made up of two and three-bedroom apartments. Other nice neighborhoods to consider include Danville, Haskell Corner and Minot Ave., among many other friendly, welcoming neighborhoods in the city. Of course, it's also important to do your own research so that you find a neighborhood that appeals to your personal lifestyle and values.
