This robust community lies 70 miles from New York City, so living here means you get to be close to the metropolis without actually living there. With a population of 80,893, Danbury is the fourth largest city in Fairfield County, and seventh in Connecticut, and there are lots of options for Danbury apartments. Danbury also falls within the New York City metropolitan area.
"Named for Danbury, England, where early settlers hailed from, its nickname is Hat City due to the history of the hat industry. By 1887, 30 factories were manufacturing five million hats per annum. The unofficial city motto is: ""Danbury Crowns Them All."" The mineral danburite is named for Danbury."
The summer high temperature is 61.3 degrees Fahrenheit and the winter low is 41.2�F, with an annual rainfall of 53 inches and an abundant average snowfall of 45 inches per year.
Transportation in Danbury is very fluid, it is the terminus of the Danbury line of the MTA Metro-North Railroad. The city has an airport, the Danbury Municipal Airport (DXR) for easy access to major hubs. The local bus line is called the Housatonic Area Regional Transit (HART), and it crisscrosses the downtown area.
Interstate 84 and U.S. Route 7 are the main arteries into and out of the city. I-84 runs west to east across the lower Hudson Valley to Waterbury and Hartford. US 7 goes south to north from Norwalk (via I-95). These highways overlap in the downtown Danbury.
The Danbury NewsTimes and the Hat City Free Press have local news, event coverage and information for the city. Radio stations include the Ethnic WFAR, the classical W241CA (WSHU) and the classic hits W233CF (WAXB-AM).
According to the NewsTimes, 24/7 Wall St. magazine, based on a range of variables, such as crime rates, employment opportunities, restaurants and attractions, and housing affordability, Danbury came in second of a list of America's 50 Best Cities to Live. "One of the best landmarks is the Danbury War Memorial, which has a recreational and educational facility and is located inside Rogers Park. The logo over the front door reads, ""To honor the dead, to serve the living,"" and the War Memorial hosts a variety of social and cultural events."
There is a lot to do if you come to Danbury. Leisure activities revolve around the outdoors and are not hard to find. With 10 nature parks and 57 marinas, you can find almost anything you can think of to get into. Local and regional bands rock the Bandshell in City center during the Summer Series partnership with the city and local restaurants. Danbury hosts a Halloween on the Green, Light the Lights, Thumbs up Thursday events downtown, and there are many other events downtown. The Palace Theater and Heirloom Arts Theater present great entertainment options.
Danbury hosts festivals all year long. Here are a few key events. In May, Danbury hosts the Little Folk Farm Day, In April, you can enjoy the Hudson Valley Wine and Chocolate Festival. In August, you can celebrate again at the Putnam County Wine and Food Fest.
Norwich, Connecticut is only an hour and a half East of Danbury, and is a great place for a romantic getaway. Cozy bed and breakfasts are at found throughout some of the most beautiful countryside in New England. Alternatively, you can get a hotel in Hartford or New Haven with sophisticated amenities like in-room Jacuzzis.
