Write a ReviewMeridien is a beautiful town located in the Tristate area. It is perhaps most noted for its stunning forested areas, including more than 3,000 acres of parks. The city is a quiet, suburban community that is just the opposite of what many would find in the New York City area. Some people live in Meridien and then travel to NYC because of its proximity and much lower cost of life. Yet, this small town has much to offer to the over 60,000 people who call it home.
The city of Meridien was once a part of Wallingford but was granted its own rights to be a city in 1727. By 1806, more than 1,000 people lived there, and by 1867, the city had reached 9,000 residents. The oldest home in the city was built in 1711 and is called the Solomon Goffe House. During the later part of the 1800s, the city became a center for manufacturing, including silver products, lamps, musical instruments, and glassware. Numerous factories developed here after the turn of the century, most of which became resources during World War II to support the war effort. By 1948, the city was becoming an art center with its beautiful architecture and numerous exhibitions that drew international attention.
The weather in Meridien is very much the same as much of New England. The winter months are very cold, with temperatures averaging in the 20s and 30s most days. The area sees a substantial amount of snowfall as well. During the spring months, temperatures warm up to around 70 degrees on warm days, though rain tends to be more significant. During the summer, temperatures can rise into the 90s, though they are more commonly around the 80s as a high average. Fall brings with it more rain as well as lower temperatures, though the area is most well noted for its stunning leaf displays during the early fall months.
There are several ways to get around the city, though most people drive their own cars. The Bus system called the Connecticut Transit System, is one of the most popular options. It has several bus lines that move through the city, including stops at Meridien Square, Kohls Plaza, and New Haven. The city also is accessible by Amtrak for those who want to use a railroad to get around the region. The Meriden Markham Municipal Airport is also located within the city for those looking for regional connectivity. For international flights, the Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks is the closest option.
The major highway that runs through the area is I-91, which provides access to Hartford, a popular path for those who are commuting. That trip takes about 30 minutes. A bit further is New Haven. Other major highways here include I-84 and I-91, which takes residents to the Waterbury area.
The main newspaper in the city is the Meriden Daily Journal. It provides more of a local focus for residents. The Meridien Record Journal is another option that has a slightly larger focus that includes Southington, Wallingford, and Cheshire as well. There are a number of radio channels in the area, including WBOM, an R&B Station, WKSS, 95.7, WDRC, for talk radio, and WWYZ for country music. As for television, the area shares most of its channels with those of New Haven, and access to all streaming services is available here.
Some people make the decision to live in Meridien because of its location near New York City and within New England in general. Yet, there are many other reasons to call this city home, including its beautiful parks and forested areas offering stunning trails, fishing opportunities, and exceptional seasonal weather. As a suburban town, there are tree-lined neighborhoods here, various smaller playgrounds, and a full sports program for kids and adults. Senior centers are also available within the community. The city has a cost of living that is much more affordable than New Haven or NYC but still is a bit higher than other areas. Housing costs are moderate, and the school system is robust. The area's sports programs, religious programming, and a wide range of commercial-oriented businesses make this community one that offers just about everything for everyone who calls the area home.
Meridien's rich history has created numerous landmarks throughout the city, including the Civil War Monument from 1873 and the Curtis Memorial Library from 1903. Several parks exist here, including Hubbard Park, which is about 1,800 acres in space. It is a part of the Hanging Hills area and is home to the Castle Craig, which is an impressive building that is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Solomon Goffee House, also on the list, is the oldest standing building here. The Old Traffic Tower, Moses Andrews House, and the Miller Company are all popular destinations within the city for those who want to learn about the area's history.
For those who want to enjoy the outdoors, Giuffrida Park is an excellent choice, with several hiking trails and a lake for fishing. The Hunter Golf Course is also available and is a public course available to anyone. Some may wish to visit the Mattabesett Trail and the Metacomet Trail, both of which pass through the city. Castle Craig is a historical landmark many people come to explore, and there are also various events planned throughout the year, including summer movies in the parks, annual festivals, and more. Some come to explore Higby Mountain, while others take to the Augusta Curtis Cultural Center for some fun.
Throughout the year, numerous festivals and events take place here. The Daffodil Festival, which first started in 1978, is one good example of this. The community celebrates the Potato & Corn Festival each year, along with the New Haven Grand Prix. Holiday events, including Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year's, are also common. There is also the Beardsley Zoo Winter Art Festival that takes place nearby. During the warmer months, look for concerts in the parks as well as the Meriden Arts in the Park events in September.
Meredien's location makes it an excellent choice for those who want to see any area of New England. It is about 90 minutes from locations like Brooklyn and Williamsburg to the south. The Clarksburg State Forst is about 80 miles away and ideal for those who want to camp, fish, and hike. It is possible to spend some time heading to Boston, Salem, or Marblehead in the Massachusetts area. Some may enjoy a trip to Kensington, New Hampshire, for the history, or Windsor, Vermont, for the waterfront.
Much of Meridien is residential, and it is possible to find some fantastic apartment complexes throughout the city. The area along E. Main Street is a popular option because it is close to parks, Route 5, and numerous amenities. Parker Avenue and Pomeroy Avenue are popular areas. Also notable is the area near Hannover Street and along Bradley Avenue.
