Mount Prospect Overview

The city of Mount Prospect is a popular suburb of Chicago with a population of near 55,000 people. Many of those residents love the area's urban feel and the multiple entertainment options offered all throughout town. The community is made up of young professionals who are looking for a quality school system for their young children. Most choose to live in an apartment first in order to save money then purchase a home later. 

What is the history of Mount Prospect?

In 1833, a group of New England farmers came, cleared and planted on the land that would later become the downtown area of Mount Prospect. Later, a local railroad company placed track that ran through the heart of Mount Prospect, but it would be a few years (1886) before a stop was created in town. The area's biggest land barron, Ezra Carpenter Eggleston, who owned the entire south side of the railroad tracks, was instrumental in naming the town. Eggleston felt the land stood on the highest point in Cook County and thus named the city, Mount Prospect. Post World War II, the town became home to middle-class Chicagoans looking for an alternative lifestyle away from the big city life.

How is the weather in Mount Prospect?

In Mount Prospect, you will experience all four (spring, summer, fall and winter) seasons as the best time of the year weatherwise is from June-September. The average temperature during this time is 74 degrees Fahrenheit with the high being 84 degrees and the low around 67 degrees. Usually, the summer months are humid and wet, while the winter months are cold and windy. The coldest period is from December-March with an average temperature of 32 degrees. The high during this time is 42 degrees and the low being 18 degrees.

How do I get around town?

The majority of Mount Prospect residents are regular public transportation commuters to the Chicago area for their jobs. The train service is the North Central Service Line which travels from Antioch, IL to Chicago's Union Station. What is the Mount Prospect commute like?

The commute to Chicago from Mount Prospect is approximately 24 miles or a 29 minute non-stop drive on either the I-90W or I-94W. However, the latter rarely happens as the traffic conditions are unpredictable. Most drivers can add an hour to their day if the roads become too congested. However, both highways offer a direct access to downtown Chicago and a short detour to O'Hare Airport. 

What are the local media outlets?

Mount Prospect has a very vibrant media community as being one of the main suburbs to Chicago, residents have access to multiple options for print media, radio and television (Fox, The CW, ABC, NBC, CBS and PBS)  networks. The community has a very popular local newspaper called the Daily Herald and the content offers the latest news and events happening in the Mount Prospect area. Plus, many of the residents subscribe to the Chicago Tribune to gain further national news coverage. Illinois has quite a number of movies and television shows that depict the feel of the area. In fact, some of those productions have filmed on the streets of Chicago in the past. Some of the most notable programs include NBC's successful group of Chicago-related programming: Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD.

This gives a children a remarkable avenue to continuing their education at a higher level. Plus, Mount Prospect is an ideal location to raise an active family as the area is home to multiple outdoor parks. 

What Mount Prospect landmarks should I see?

If you're looking for a wonderful historic venue to visit, then head over to the Grove in Glenview, IL. It's a well-preserved piece of historical real estate that still holds the structures of the area's pioneer days in the 1800s. Plus, groups can gather and hike together through the scenic trails and picnic near the property's main pond. Another fun landmark to visit is the Leaning Tower of Niles. It offers a great background for any photo opportunity and has become a definite stop for those traveling on the local roadways. 

What is there to do around Mount Prospect?

Residents of Mount Prospect beleive they have plenty of things to do in and around town. They can gather together and attend special events that educates others on the arts and local history. Or spend an evening out with family and friends at a local restaurant. Others choose to spend their free time being active inside one of the many outdoor parks located in the area. 

Any annual festivals or Mount Prospect events to know?

Newcomers to the area get familiar to their new surroundings by attending annual festivals in the Mount Prospect area. One of the more popular festivals is the Annual Lion's Club Festival in July. It offers live entertainment, great food and fireworks to culminate the festivities. Another popular festival is the Celebration of Cultures which takes place in the fall. The organizers want to salute the diverse population that makes up the Mount Prospect community. The festival offers entertainment, boothes and food from different cultures around the world.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

The majority of Midwesterners treat the summer like gold and cherish their precious vacation time. One of the more popular tourist destinations is the Mackinac Islands, which is found on the Great Lakes. it's home to a world-class museum and popular downtown scene of fine dining and late night entertainment. Another vacation option is the Indiana Dunes off the southern tip of Lake Michigan. The area offers great beaches, thrilling biking and hiking trails. 

Where is the best place to move in Mount Prospect?

Living in Mount Prospect is going to be one of the great experiences offered in the United States. The area has so many great places to live, many just choose a community that matches their personality. Two of the more popular locations are Clarendon Hills and Lake in the Hills as each offers a small town feel outside of the big city.
