Pittsfield Overview
While traveling to the Berkshires, all must pass through Pittsfield, Massachusetts, with many falling instantly in love with this region, and for good reason. With its bustling downtown area and attractive greenspaces all around, it is no wonder over 44,000 people proudly call this region home. Publications all around rank this city high as a great place to start a business, enjoy life after retirement, and everything in between. It even secured the number one spot on the Arts Vibrancy Index in 2017 for its phenomenal arts and culture scene.
What is the history of Pittsfield?
Long before beautiful apartments in Pittsfield became a reality, it served as the land of the Mahican tribe until the early 1700s. After that, Colonel Jacob Wendell purchased much of the land that is now the gorgeous cityscape in 1738. Then, the village started to expand, becoming an incorporated township less than 25 years later. The region was largely developed as an agricultural area, as the brooks made it easy for lumber mills to set up shop. Woolen manufacturers joined the fray in 1807 as settlers brought in flocks of Merino sheep. By the early 1900s, the landscape had largely changed, becoming the metropolis that is known and loved today.
How is the weather in Pittsfield?
While living in Pittsfield apartments, you can expect your fair share of drizzle, as 46 inches of rain come down every year on average. Snowfall is equally plentiful with 71 inches a year providing plenty of chances for sledding and building snowmen. As the rain and snow clear, sunny days come around once again, brightening up nearly 200 days every year. With the sun comes high temperatures at a comfortable 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while winter drops them to 11 degrees at the coldest.
How do I get around town?
Although having a car is the most convenient option, you can get by without one while living in apartments in Pittsfield. Instead, you can travel by train or on local and intercity buses. Ran by Amtrak, the train line goes from the city center to Boston and Albany-Rensselaer with many stops in between. Intercity bus routes go equally far, transporting passengers to New York City, Williamstown, and more. For local trips, there is always the buses ran by the Berkshire Regional Transit Authority, which travel all through the city and its surrounding areas.
What is the Pittsfield commute like?
Coming together in the center of Pittsfield are several highways you can use to commute to and from all your engagements. US Route 20 comes from the east and actually extends all the way across the country to Newport, Oregon. At the west is Massachusetts Route 9 that goes straight to Boston. Serving south to north commutes is US 7, which extends from Norwalk, Connecticut, to Interstate 89 at the Canadian border.
What are the local media outlets?
As it is widely honored as the Berkshires gateway, Pittsfield takes on the reporting of their news as well as their own. They publish stories daily in their home newspaper, The Berkshire Eagle, which covers most of the county news. They produce their news stories in print and online, winning numerous awards for their fine reporting. On TV, you can get your news from NEWS10 ABC, serving most of Massachusetts while living in this excellent region. WNYT TV out of Albany, New York, occasionally reports on news from Pittsfield, though it is mostly just the big stories of the day.

In the Upstreet Cultural District, they hold a monthly artswalk to show off works by local artists across all disciplines. These artswalks allow you to see the paintings, photographs, textiles, and more made by your neighbors throughout the year. The Barrington Stage Company joins the fun with an annual festival each February, bringing musicians and other performers to the streets. The events continue through the spring, summer, and beyond to maintain the close-knit community atmosphere everyone enjoys.
