Simi Valley Overview

Simi Valley is a beautiful community that sits in the Simi Valley itself, in an area just to the southeast of Ventura County. The city has much to offer, including incredible weather, easy access to much of the Greater Los Angeles area, and numerous amenities. Apartments in Simi Valley, California, allow people to live in the heart of the city, in an area with a stunning park around just about every corner. Surrounding by the Simi Hills and Santa Susana Mountains, this community is ideal for outdoor lovers, but it’s also great for those who need to commute into the city for work or school. 

What is the history of Simi Valley?

Simi Valley spans 42 square miles. Its history started more than 13,000 years ago when the Chumash people lived in the area. They remained here until the 1800s. There were two Chumash villages here, the Ta’apu and Shimiji. There was a third settlement in the area of Moorpark called Kimishax. In 1795, San Jose de Nuestra Senora de Altagracia y Simi was awarded Santiago Pico. This land grant, the largest ever made, provided him with 113,000 acres. Through that early founding, the city grew to include more modern amenities and neighborhoods, especially as the Greater Los Angeles grew as well. 

How is the weather in Simi Valley?

For those considering the apartments in Simi Valley from out of state or out of the region, the weather is one of the best features of living here. The summer months are warm and dry, with temperatures around the 70s, thanks to being in the valley. The biggest weather concern here is wildfires, which can break out from time to time. The winter months are cool, with temperatures during the day reaching around 50 degrees. Winter months can also bring with them a significant amount of rain, though snow itself is very rare here. February tends to be the wettest month through the area gets only around 18 inches of rain each year.

How do I get around town?

Getting around Simi Valley is possible in several ways. There are three airports nearby for those who are travelers, including the Los Angeles International Airport, which is about 42 miles from the city. As for local transportation, there is a local bus system available called the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA), which provides transportation to the area’s commercial centers. It’s possible to walk from one area to the next here, such as to a park or small restaurant, in many of the neighborhoods. Many of the city’s neighborhoods, including those where apartments in Simi Valley are prevalent, are within walking distance of the bus stops. 

What is the Simi Valley commute like?

Highway 118 runs through the heart of the city and links to both Highway 101 and 23, as well as I-5, I-405, and I-210, which provides good access to the surrounding area. Traffic can be difficult during the work week especially leading into the surrounding cities. However, many people take Amtrak or Metrolink to get around across the region, which can significantly reduce congestion. Simi Valley’s traffic isn’t the same as other areas of Los Angeles, but it can be difficult during the morning rush hour and later in the afternoon when everyone is coming home from work and school. 

What are the local media outlets?

Staying connected in Simi Valley apartments is fairly easy to do. There are numerous local radio stations in the area, including KCSN 88.5 and 92.7 Jill FM for music. The area’s largest TV stations locally include KCBS, KNBC, and KTLA, all of which come out of Los Angeles. Many people turn to other streaming services for TV access. Another way to remain connected is with the newspaper called The Acorn. It’s the best place to remain up to date on what’s happening in the city itself. 

Why live in Simi Valley, CA?

There’s quite a lot to love about living in Simi Valley apartments. That includes the green aspects of this community. Though it’s not a large city, it is home to 39 parks, many of which have walking trails, dog parks, hiking trails, and bike paths. There are also three golf courses managed by the city. There’s lots to do as well, including going to the movies or checking out one of the area’s landmarks like the Strathearn Historical Park and Museum and Grandma Prisbrey’s Bottle Village. It’s also the home to the Paramount Ranch with its stunning views. It’s also home to the American Jewish University Bardin Campus.

There are a number of unique landmarks in Simi Valley to get out of the apartment and enjoy. Explore on your next day off and see everything that the town can offer you!

What is there to do around Simi Valley?

With 4,000 acres of parkland, that could be one of the best ways to spend time here, but there’s much more. The Sinaloa Golf Course and the Simi Hills Golf Course are both well-maintained, beautiful courses. For those that want to explore the area, consider a trip to the Museum of Military History Posters and Memorability or spend the day at Simi Valley Town Center, where there are various shops and restaurants to enjoy. The Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center performs a variety of musicals and plays throughout the year here. There’s also the Iceoplex for those that love ice skating and hockey, as well as Lazertag Extreme for a bit of an adventure. Harley’s Simi Bowl and the Skateboard Hall of Fame also make this area special. 

Any annual festivals or Simi Valley events to know?

The Simi Valley hosts a number of events throughout the year, including the Simi Valley Oktoberfest, music events, and the Simi Valley Street Fair. The Simi Valley Days Parade and Carnival take place every fall. There’s also the Cajun Festival that brings together people to celebrate the area’s food favorites. The annual Dia de Los Muertos Arts Festival takes place each May. Other festivals include the St. rose of Lima Annual Carnival and the Simi Valley Town Center Farmer’s Market. The Rotary Club of Thousands Oaks Street Fair is a fun event that happens each summer. In addition, there are holiday events throughout the months of November and December. 

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Simi Valley is close to all of the Greater Los Angeles area, which means visiting locations like Santa Maria or Los Angeles proper is easy to do. It’s possible to drive up and down the coast to visit San Diego or head towards San Francisco. There are other, more local places to visit as well, including Lake Arrowhead, Oak Glen, and The Badlands. For those that want to drive less than 2 hours from their apartment in Simi Valley northwest, the Foxen Vineyard and Cambria Winery are top notch destinations. 

Where is the best place to move in Simi Valley?

It’s hard to say where the best place to find apartments in Simi Valley is because there are numerous locations that are simply beautiful and welcoming. The Rancho Simi Community Park area offers great access to area schools and amenities. However, there are also some outstanding benefits to living near the Route 118 area, especially around Madera Rd, where there are a number of commercial establishments such as stores and restaurants. The Ronald Reagan Freeway has a number of apartments in Simi Valley, many of them close to area parks as well as near the Rocky Mountains Parks, where the views are fantastic. For those looking for a more walkable area, the area near Bard Lake can also be the ideal choice.
