Los Angeles Overview

The City of Los Angeles, popularly known by its initials L.A., is the most populous city in the state of California, United States. This beautiful and vibrant city holds many distinctions and many options in Los Angeles apartments that make it one of the best locations to settle and visit on the west coast. Located in Southern California, Los Angeles is not only known as the entertainment capital of the American industry, but also as that of the world. L.A. boasts of a great ethnic diversity, an expansive metropolis, a great heritage displayed in over 100 museums, and a Mediterranean climate that makes it a paradise of great weather. Los Angeles is the place to be. In fact, L.A. is the only North American city that prides itself for hosting the Summer Olympics twice.

Los Angeles History

Los Angeles was founded in September 4th 1791 by Felipe de Neve, a Spanish governor at the time. It was founded after 44 villagers from the Mexican provinces of Sinaloa and Sonora came to live in what is now Downtown Los Angeles. Two of these settlers were Spaniards while the others comprised of Blacks, Indians, and Mestizos of diverse ancestry. The town was named El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles de Porcincula, meaning “Our Lady the Queen of the angels of Porcincula”. L.A. became part of United States in 1847 after being captured by US forces. At first, there were a handful of families in the town but the discovery of oil in 1892 massively fueled the growth of the city.

Los Angeles Weather

Southern California’s climate is often referred to as the “perfect climate” for a good reason. Los Angeles city experiences a Subtropical-Mediterranean climate that gives it many sunny days with warmth and gentle breezes especially in the summer. The humidity of the city is low and there is relatively little or no rain. In Spring, you can expect to find averagely high temperatures that linger in the comfortable mid 70s but with no summer’s overwhelming smog and winter’s prevalent rain. In summer, you can expect an almost dry and warm season with average high temperatures that range in the mid 80s. The autumn temperatures average in the high 70s and low 80s.Winters are mild with average temperatures on the upper 60s, which is definitely better than the freezing cold experienced in other major U.S. cities such as New York.

Los Angeles Media

The L.A. population is served by different types of media including, news stations, newspapers, radio stations and internet radio stations. The major daily newspaper serving the city and its neighborhoods is the Los Angeles Times. There is also the ‘La Opinion’, which serves as the city’s major Spanish language newspaper. Other smaller regional newspapers and magazines include the Los Angeles Daily News, the Los Angeles magazine, LA Weekly, Los Angeles Register, the Hollywood Reporter, and more. The L.A metro is also served by numerous local TV stations that include, NBC, CBS, The CW, ABC and Fox among more. Radio stations include KCBS, KOST, KSWD and internet radio stations such as CANDY 103 and Maxradio.fm.

Los Angeles Landmarks

Even if you have never been to Los Angeles, I can bet that you have seen the Hollywood Sign in many U.S. movies. Well, this is one of the important landmarks of L.A. Others include, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, TCL Chinese Theatre, Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, Angels Flight Dolby Theatre, Getty Center, Getty Villa, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Griffith Observatory, Hollywood Bowl, Capitol Records Building and the U.S. Bank Tower. There are three major public universities situated within the city’s limits namely, California State University, Northridge (CSUN), California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA), and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Also, you can stroll out of your apartment and visit the Getty museum or Griffin Park and Observatory. You can also visit the music center and pop in to one or all of the four venues here including, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Ahmson Theatre, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and the Mark Taper Forum. Commuting in Los Angeles

Some of the major highways serving Los Angeles include, Interstate 405, Interstate 10 and U.S. Route 101. Interstate 105, also known as the San Diego Freeway, is the main north and south freeway for Western L.A. It is the most commonly used highway to LAX and is also a bypass for Interstate 5. Interstate 10, also known as the Santa Monica/San Bernadino Freeway, is the main east and west freeway connecting Downtown L.A. to Santa Monica. It travels from east L.A through Phoenix, Houston, New Orleans, and to Jacksonville, Florida. U.S Route 101, also called the Hollywood/Ventura Freeway, is the major north-south route that connects L.A. to Central Coast, San Francisco Bay area, and the North Coast. However, traffic is still of major concern in L.A. as the city’s drivers spent an average of 81 hours idling on the freeways in 2015.
