Phoenix Overview

Phoenix is the capital of Arizona, but there is a rich and diverse cultural history to this city that extends well beyond the local government. Phoenix is the home to many businesses, artists, and scholars and so much more that make it a wonderful place to call home. Combine all of that with a wide variety of superb options of apartments in Pheonix and the surrounding metro area and you have a recipe for a truly amazing place to live.
History

Phoenix History

For centuries, this area of Arizona was occupied by the Hohokam peoples, a large groups of tribes that developed an extensive canal system throughout the area. By 1867, however, the area had begun to attract a larger number of settlers from the east. By the 1180s, the development of the railroad caused the area to grow large enough to warrant becoming the state’s capital.
Weather

Phoenix Weather

Phoenix is located in the middle of the desert, giving the area very mild, short winters and long, hot summers. In fact, the city has more days that exceed 100 degrees in a year than any other major metropolitan area in the United States.
Getting_around

Getting Around Phoenix

While there is some limited bus service in the Phoenix area, the majority of residents rely on private vehicles for their daily transportation needs. Because of the large size of the city, most residents commute from their homes to their workplaces located in the city center. Phoenix is also home to an international airport, and several large regional airports exist in the surrounding area.
Commuting

Commuting in Phoenix

While exact commute times can vary, it is important to note that Phoenix is generally considered to be relatively uncongested. While the city has the sixth highest population in the United States, none of its roads have been ranked by the DOT as being in the worst 100 freeways. One of the main reasons for this is that the city was laid out in a grid pattern, with major arterial roads spaced every one mile. This makes it relatively easy to reroute traffic for accidents and other events. In addition to these local roads, there are also several state highways, I-10 and I-17 running through or around the city.
Media

Phoenix Media

" The main newspaper, the Phoenix Herald, has been publishing in the city since 1878. Today it largely exists in an online format. Other major papers include the East Valley Tribune and The Arizona Republic. There are several TV stations serving Phoenix and the surrounding area. In fact, the market area for that includes the city is one of the largest areas in the United States, with over 1.8 million homes receiving the signal. You’ll find affiliates for major networks such as ABC, NBC, and CBS, as well as several stations carrying lesser-known networks such as Telemundo, Daystar, and Univision."
Why_here

Why Here

" Phoenix is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States, with new companies and jobs arriving almost daily. The warm weather and relatively low cost of living has made the area very attractive to everyone from young professionals looking for their first job to retirees looking to take advantage of the mild winters and low cost of living while still having all of the advantages of living in a major city. Many people are flocking to the area to take advantage of job opportunities with companies such as Avnet, Mesa Air Group, and a variety of large hospitals and research centers."
Landmarks

Phoenix Landmarks

There are dozens of museums, art galleries, and historic landmarks throughout the city of Phoenix. Within and surrounding the city are numerous sites showcasing the Native American culture and history int he area. In the government district, you’ll find the Capital building and many other sites dating back to a time before Arizona was a state. You’ll also find a high number of parks and recreation areas.
Things_to_do

Things to do in Phoenix

" Because of the large amount of diversity in Phoenix, there are a lot of different things to do, see, and try. If you’re looking to eat, Phoenix has several world-renowned steak houses. There are also a number of restaurants serving authentic Mexican cuisine. Of course, you’ll also find Korean barbecue, Greek gyros, and just about any other type of food you can imagine. Phoenix is home to dozens of museums and art galleries. There are a large number of local artists showing traditional Native American crafts and Hispanic artwork. In addition, the sixty is home to its own ballet theater group, opera, zoo, and symphonic orchestra."
Festivals

Phoenix Festivals

There are hundreds of large and small festivals throughout the year in and around the city of Phoenix. The largest horse show in the world occurs every year in nearby Scottsdale. IN addition to showing over 2200 horse, the annual event is also considered to be the first leg in what is commonly referred to as the Arabian Triple Crown. The Pueblo Grande Indian Market is an annual market and gathering of many diverse Native American tribes. You’ll find streets of pop-up shops, hundreds of skilled artisans, and days of presentations, dances, and other events highlighting Native American culture. Finally, be sure to catch the Arizona State Fair. Families come from all over the state to show animals, participate in contests, and of course, try the latest carnival food.
Vacation_spots

Phoenix Vacation spots

While there are plenty things to do in the city, many people are surprised by how much there is to do within a day’s drive of their Phoenix apartments. The most popular tourist attraction is the Grand Canyon, of course. The size of the national park is large enough that it is possible to spend several days just trying to see all of it. Fortunately, there are a number of different tour packages available. Many Phoenix residents also like to drive to nearby Las Vegas, NV. This adult city features all kinds of shows, fabulous hotels, and gambling. If you prefer to stay closer, then it might be a good idea to check out the resorts located on the surrounding reservations. Many tribes have invested heavily in their casinos and resorts, and they frequently host concerts and other events from around the country.
Where_to_move

Where to move in Phoenix

While many people choose to live in the nearby towns of Scottsdale and Mesa, there are a lot of great options for Phoenix apartments and rental homes within city limits. Neighborhoods such as Arcadia offer great schools and houses on large plots of land. North Tempe is located near Arizona State University and offers a wide variety of housing options. If you want to live the high life, try North Central. This area of the city features homes of many notable figures such as John McCain. If you’re looking for something where commuting is not an issue, you may want to consider a planned community such as Verrado.
