From the view of your Albany-area apartment you can see it, but you'll be darned if you can figure out exactly what it is...an oversized gigantic football? Some sort of otherworldly flying saucer? Nope, wrong on both counts. It's Albany's world-famous structure The Egg! One part architectural mindblower, one part performance hall, The Egg is an insanely unique part of Albany's history, and a mandatory visit for anyone new in town. While construction on The Egg began in the 1960's, it took over a dozen years to complete and did not open its doors until 1978. Since then, it has hosted a countless number of theatrical presentations, live music acts, comedians and other performers. Known on a global scale for not only its strange oval shape but also for its pristine, pitch-perfect acoustics, The Egg guarantees that there's never a bad seat in the house. As with most performing art centers of this size and scope, The Egg places a hearty emphasis in their performance schedule upon education through the arts. Thus, you're just as likely to spot a large group of school children on their way to catch a historical reading by 'Rosa Parks', as you are to run into a rowdy crew of teenagers in line for Henry Rollins. A surprising variety of libations are offered despite the venue's upscale feel (sake anyone?), with a number of fine dining restaurants within short walking distance as well. So for Albany-area apartment-ites eager to fill up on their artistic entertainment, this is one Egg that's pretty hard to beat.
