Like a lot of apartment-ites, you feel pretty comfortable in your own kitchen. Sure, you may not be Iron Chef material, but you can certainly whip up a pretty decent meal, and your homemade lasagna even got some raves at that last apartment-wide potluck dinner. Still, there's an intangible joy to dining out that you can't help but succumb to occasionally, when the promise of a fine dining experience shucks you from the comfortable confines of your apartment and out into the world of culinary adventure. For those new to the Albany, New York area, Yono's Restaurant is a destination few others can equal. You could safely assume that proprietor Yono Purnomo knows his food, as this former American Culinary Chef of the Year has been featured everywhere from national magazine covers to the 'Today' show. At Yono's, four-star dining is a way of life, and the chef's unique blending of Indonesian and French cuisine has yielded an almost indescribable combination of tastes. Try the Armstrong Appetizer for a sweeping sampling of the restaurant's varied influences, complete with tasting-sized portions of crab cake, acar and sare. The always-popular Pirate Soup is another crowd-pleaser, seasoned with lemongrass on a base broth consisting of lamb, chicken and beef stock. Entrees such as the beef short ribs and maple leaf duck are incomparable, perfectly accented by any one of the venue's numerous wine selections housed in its cellar. As with any fine dining experience, the prices tend to be on the high end, so odds are good that Yono's will make its mark as a 'once a month' night out for most apartment-ites. But fans of exciting culinary creation will undoubtedly keep a careful eye on their apartment's calendar, counting the days for another go-round with Yono.
