Horrible experience being mislead by HS management

I chose Hudson Square Apartments in Westerville, OH because I specifically wanted a high-floor apartment and found one there. As I inquired about the unit, the management told me the unit was vacant but couldn’t be shown yet because it was undergoing “cleaning and restoring.” When they finally let me tour it, the apartment had a quite strong smell of bleach and cleaning products. I was assured this was simply because it had just been cleaned that day.

as the chemicals' smell faded, it had given way to an overwhelming cigarettes smoke odor, deeply impregnated in the entire apartment. It turned out that the "generous" usage of chlorine-scented cleaning products was actually meant to mask this smoking stench. I called the management and (upon someone visiting the unit and verifying my complaint) they told me it would be a quick fix. Instead, this ended up being a months-long frustrating and unsuccessful process. I was repeatedly asked to vacate the apartment for days at a time without compensation so they could “treat it” for smell removal. Each attempt only made the problem worse and the apartment kept smelling really bad.
Eventually, management offered to move me to a ground-floor unit, but this was not what I signed up for. I had chosen this building specifically because I wanted a high floor unit.
I decided to find another place to live and informed management I would be moving out. Despite the fact that they misled me upon touring the apartment and then never fixed the smell issue, despite the fact that I was forced to spend extra money on hotel rooms (not to mention the inconvenience), they still charged an early termination fee on my card without even notifying me in advance!!!
This was my worst experience with renting an apartment. Not only was the unit practically inhabitable, but the management was dismissive, unreasonable and unwilling to take responsibility for problems they knew about from the start. I would strongly caution anyone considering this building to think twice.
Overall, I would not recommend... Save yourself time, money and headache and find another place to stay.

While we regret that your experience at Hudson Square Apartments did not meet your expectations, we do want to clarify that our team took your concerns seriously and made multiple attempts to resolve the odor issue you reported. Our team worked diligently to provide a permanent solution which included multiple treatments and offering to transfer you to another apartment after you reported that you did not like the smell of the treatments. We understand that you had a preference for a 3rd floor apartment, but we unfortunately did not have any 3rd floor apartments available at that time. Lease agreements, including early termination policies, are applied consistently to all residents to ensure fairness and cannot be altered or waived. We appreciate your perspective and are sorry to hear that you remain dissatisfied despite our efforts to resolve the issue.
