Strange fines after moving out of an apartment

I lived at Madison Ridge for almost two years, and overall I had a positive experience with the community, maintenance, and management.
Unfortunately, my move-out experience was very disappointing. We did not damage or cause any issues with the carpet during our tenancy. When we moved in, the carpet had been cleaned, but there was an existing paint stain that we documented. We were not aware of any issues underneath the carpet.

stated that there were stains underneath it from previous pet accidents. We did not have any pets, and we had no way of knowing about anything that may have happened before we moved in. If I had known the carpet had previously been exposed to pet accidents, I would have asked for it to be replaced before we moved in. My young child spent a lot of time crawling and playing on that carpet, which makes this especially upsetting.
I strongly recommend taking detailed photos and videos of everything when you move in, especially the carpet, so you can protect yourself from being held responsible for conditions that may have existed before your tenancy.
