The fire department responded after water came through our ceiling and into our electrical panel and smoke detectors. They told us to leave the affected breakers OFF until the electrical system could be evaluated.
After they left, maintenance turned those breakers BACK ON while the panel was still wet.
Maintenance then removed the wet smoke detectors and took them.
Let me make that sequence clear:
The fire department said leave the breakers off.
Maintenance turned them back on with a wet ...

Maintenance removed my smoke detectors.
Then I was essentially left with “see you Monday.”
I was home with my children.
A pipe breaking is an accident. What I cannot understand is overriding the fire department’s safety instructions, re-energizing electrical equipment exposed to water, removing the devices meant to alert my family to smoke or fire, and leaving us for the weekend.
Oncor ultimately pulled the electrical meter completely.
We were left without power trying to figure out where our family was supposed to go. Instead of professional water remediation immediately arriving, the response involved towels, a Shop-Vac, fans, and later extension cords run into the apartment to power drying equipment.
An electrician later advised that the panel needed to be replaced and Sheetrock opened to verify the surrounding area and incoming wiring were dry.
Our family relocated to temporary housing. We lost food, frozen breastmilk, and had furniture, clothing, beds, and other belongings exposed to water.
We repeatedly asked about electrical safety, remediation, and when the apartment would be safe to occupy. We eventually contacted the fire marshal, city officials/code enforcement, and Oncor ourselves.
Management later offered an agreement releasing us from our lease and reimbursing “up to $1,000.” We did not sign it.
Ultimately, an office representative brought me a sealed envelope and told me it was our notice to evict/leave. I was also told not to contact the office anymore and to communicate through their attorney.
Of everything that happened, this is what prospective residents should know:
