TLDR: Fantastic building, horrible management!
I want to start this review by stating that the Stahlman is the best experience I have had living in an apartment building. It has all the culture you would want out of a 19th century building that was once a radio station, offices, and a bank.
But is this all enough to justify continued disappointment by management that ended up costing us thousands of dollars during our 7 year stay?
I don't regret the Stahlman, I do have complete disdain for the ...
management company.
Over the 7 years during our stay, my wife and I witnessed the coming and going of 5 different management companies and a whole host of building managers to boot.
You would think that eventually they'd find someone who was competent to preserve this historical building? Nope.
Several times, we put in maintenance requests to fix a shower mold issue that kept coming back again and again, and then when we left, they charged us citing it for "damage"
Our refrigerator lost power due to a building issue and we weren't home. All of our food became rotten and we had to fight tooth and nail to get reimbursement for it.
Many times, we put in maintenance requests to fix the filters, or had a leak from the apartment above or had a routine fire inspection. The handymen would enter, eat our food and leave the empty packages and wrappers on the furniture. They would leave tracks of dirt throughout the apartment. In many cases, they would leave it dirtier than the maintenance request we put in to clean up. After working hard to come home and clean up people that were uninvited wasn't pleasant.
The final straw was when we had put in our 60 day notice to find new residency...
We were nickel and dimed to death on arbitrary costs including over $800 in what were described as "damages and cleaning fees" despite the apartment being completely empty with ZERO damage and nothing besides clothing hangers left behind (which was intentional as we thought it was courteous!). Furthermore, they fined us because our lease was "1 day" without renters insurance. Why would I pay for a years annual subscription for renters insurance when I am leaving. So fine us for 1 day? Wild. Oh, they also took our entire deposit citing "we need to sweep the apartment."
Honestly, a disappointing experience because of crappy people with horrible customer service after being a loyal tenant for more than 7 years.
