Ever since you caught that movie Ray last weekend on your apartment's surround sound flatscreen, you just can't seem to get enough tickling of the ivories. Mr. Charles, Stevie and even the original piano man himself Billy Joel have all been spinning nonstop on your Ipod, but despite their obvious greatness they just don't seem to capture the energy of a live performance. So where to turn? Why, Pete's of course! Truly a one-of-a-kind experience, Pete's Dueling Piano Bar has become an Austin landmark since it first opened its doors in 1992 (then dubbed Pete's Peanut Bar and Piano Emporium...the peanuts are no more). True to its name, the bar features two baby grands at odds, with a continuous changing roster of maestros at the helm. And those worries about hearing Chopin's 5th are quickly laid to rest upon entry - this is rock-n-roll, baby, and cuts ranging from Elvis to Sublime are belted out side-by-side. Audience participation is practically mandatory at Pete's, so wallflowers might wilt under the spotlight. This is a clapping, sing-along affair to remember, so be prepared to get a little loose. Even the wait staff get in on the action, and it is not uncommon for them to hop onstage for a number at various points throughout the night. With a devout army of regulars and a hotspot for tourists, Pete's fills up early and stays that way until late, so make a night of it. You might just discover your inner Ray.
