When your Mexican martini is "world famous", you know you are doing something right. Trudy's, much like its competition Chuy's, is an Austin Apartment-ite's staple restaurant of choice, and while Chuy's might win in the decorating department, Trudy's definitely holds its own on the traditional Mexican cuisine front. And we are talking traditional here. While the far-too-polite wait staff would certainly never frown on someone ordering a run-of-the-mill burrito, it's practically a crime when you can choose instead from Poquito Veggie Flaquities (comprised of spiced black beans, corn relish, pintos and the freshest of spinach), cream cheese-stuffed Jalapenos (go for it!), or an avocado-laden Ensalada Grande. The quality ingredients and previously mentioned emphasis upon "traditional" fare means the food takes a little longer to get to your table, but what's the rush? You've only got plans to balance your checkbook and hang around the apartment later anyway, so why not linger over a newspaper while the undeniable smell of sizzling fajita steaks invade your senses? Featuring a wide array of vegetarian dishes (as well as a sliding scale of spice-level) makes Trudy's ideal for the Mexican food novice. After all, the Tinga (spiced brisket) is not to everyone's taste, but you'll sure still look cool when you order it.
