If you’re moving to California’s magical Central Coast and looking for a place to land that strikes a great balance between affordability and access, make sure you don’t sleep on Bakersfield.
As a city, Bakersfield is incredibly diverse, both socially and economically. Bakersfield is also famous for its warm, sunny climate and friendly, down-to-earth people. Residents include everyone from young, commuting professionals to families to retirees. The economy here brings a lot to the table, as well, as Bakersfield boasts strong connections to major industries like agriculture, healthcare, and energy production.
Bakersfield is by far one of the more affordable cities on the Central Coast, making it a great fit for people looking for an amazing place to live without the usual prohibitive price tag attached. I personally love Bakersfield for its beautiful parks, picnic areas, and hiking trails. And if I have time to swing by the Bakersfield Museum of Art while I’m in town, even better!

But what’s it really like to call Bakersfield home? Which neighborhoods are the best options for those looking for affordable but enriching places to live? I’m Shannon, your ApartmentHomeLiving.com Local Expert for wonderful Bakersfield, California. Allow me to introduce you to some of the city’s most affordable and interesting neighborhoods.
1. Country Rose
If your idea of a perfect neighborhood involves green, manicured lawns and beautifully maintained single-family homes, you might want to take a closer look at Bakersfield’s Country Rose neighborhood. (There are plenty of beautiful multi-bedroom apartments for rent, as well.)
Country Rose is family-friendly, as it’s within just a stone’s throw of multiple schools and parks. Additional amenities and resources – including charming eateries, eclectic shopping centers, and unique small businesses – are just a short drive away, offering residents a wonderful balance between quiet, peaceful suburban living and the convenience of downtown proximity.
2. North Bakersfield
If you choose to put down roots (temporary or otherwise) in North Bakersfield, you’ll quickly see that it blends idyllic suburban life with the unique perks of rural living. There are lots of single-family homes and modern apartments for rent here, but there are also resources like mobile home parks to take advantage of. Working-class families and budget-conscious commuters make up the bulk of the population.
As a neighborhood, North Bakersfield is comparatively very affordable. It’s also conveniently located near major roadways, including Highway 99, making it super-commute-friendly. This part of Bakersfield is right next door to some of the city’s best attractions, as well. Examples include Kern River County Park, the California Living Museum, and the Big Red Barn.
I’m personally a big fan of Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace. Do yourself a favor and keep an eye on the event schedule there, as it’s known for its seriously epic country music performances.

3. Outer East Bakersfield
Like North Bakersfield, Outer East Bakersfield delivers a semi-rural living experience and access to a unique mixture of different homes. Older, more classic homes are available right alongside newer developments that are more modern. There are also plenty of affordable apartments for rent.
Communities are close-knit in Outer East Bakersfield, and housing is very wallet-friendly, making this neighborhood a solid fit for renters on a tight budget. Plenty of access to schools and points of interest like the Park at River Walk and Hart Memorial Park also make it attractive to those looking to live a quiet, tranquil life, including small families and retirees.

4. Redwood Estates
Looking to set up shop in a well-established neighborhood with plenty of charming appeal? Redwood Estates offers Bakersfield residents a nice mix of appealing but affordable housing options, including quirky townhouses and cozy single-family homes.
Redwood Estates is also well-known for its gated community, beautiful tree-lined streets, and large properties. Private streets and plenty of greenery lend this neighborhood a delightful rural feel while maintaining access to essentials like award-winning schools, peaceful hiking trails (check out Priest Rock Trail!), favorite local eateries, and even stimulating nightlife.
There are even a couple of wineries nearby. If you’re a wine-tasting nut like me, make sure you make plans to swing by Villa del Monte Winery and sample some of the goods.
5. Westdale North
Large lots, charming single-family dwellings, and quiet streets – just a few of the perks you can look forward to if you move to Bakersfield’s family-friendly Westdale North neighborhood. Westdale North is clean, peaceful, and safe, making it extra attractive to families, retirees, and just about anyone else looking for a no-stress atmosphere.
Into activities like sports with friends or picnicking with the family? Westdale Park is a wonderful place to enjoy an afternoon under the trees with loved ones or partake in a friendly game of basketball, tennis, volleyball, or softball. Residents are also quite close to Bakersfield cultural staples like the California Living Museum and the sprawling Kern County Museum. Beautiful settings, rich history, and plenty to do – that’s Westdale North in a nutshell.
6. Brighton
If you like the idea of moving into a newer development with plenty of options to choose from, make sure you check out Brighton during your search for a new place to hang your hat. Brighton’s claim to Bakersfield fame is its diverse selection of stylishly designed homes, modern apartments, and family dwellings.
Residents also benefit from perks like amazing schools and lush parks. Liberty Park has a wonderful playground to explore, plus beautifully kept soccer fields. And you can check out the youth baseball leagues in action at Aera Park.
Are you 55 or over and looking for a truly exceptional place to live in Bakersfield? Brighton Parks is a private 55-plus community packed with slick amenities like pickleball courts, an indoor gym, pocket parks, and more. I have a good friend who lived there and loved absolutely everything about it.
7. Belsera
Belsera is another of the newer developments in Bakersfield – modern and practical, while remaining budget-friendly. This neighborhood is also a fantastic fit for those who like the idea of living somewhere that balances comfortable residential areas with appealing attractions of all types.
Looking for your next favorite spot to enjoy an afternoon stroll or maybe capture an Insta-worthy shot or two? Check out the Park at Riverwalk. It’s spacious and comes complete with features like lakes, streams, and even a bridge or two. Wildlife lovers and hiking enthusiasts will love the proximity to Wind Wolves Preserve. Belsera residents are super close to unique additional amenities like the AMC Bakersfield 6 movie theater and the 19th Street Antique Mall, as well.
8. Choctaw Valley
Choctaw Valley is another desirable neighborhood for those who prefer affordable rural living in a peaceful, appealing setting. However, you’re still never more than a hop, skip, and a jump away from plenty of desirable amenities. (Families in search of homes with generous yards will especially love it here.)
Choctaw Valley residents are just a short jaunt away from locations like Lake Ming, a man-made lake popular among those who love waterskiing, motorboating, and similar activities. You’ll also enjoy easy access to the Kern River Parkway, a very walkable winding trail system that follows the Kern River and includes access to a range of natural ecosystems and fun activities.
9. Rio Bravo
Formerly known as Panama, Rio Bravo is located just a few miles south of Bakersfield proper. Housing options include everything from charming, family-appropriate ranch-style homes to cozy, affordable mobile homes. A rural, agricultural setting guarantees plenty of access to wide open spaces and peaceful places to spend an afternoon.
Rio Bravo Country Club includes an 18-hole championship golf course with jaw-dropping views of the nearby Sierra Nevada Mountains. Looking for a unique place to take the kids or enjoy some wholesome family fun? You’re super close to Solera Gardens Park with its impressive play area and additional recreational amenities. (My husband and I personally love the horseshoe pits.)
Rio Bravo also offers easy access to multiple grocery stores, restaurants, and cafes that include a mix of familiar chain staples and local mom-and-pop operations.
10. Mountain Meadows
If you like the idea of moving to an unincorporated Kern County community near Bakersfield, Mountain Meadows is worth considering. It’s teeny-tiny, with a population of just over 300 people or so. Folks love this place for the rural peace it brings to the table while remaining within easy reach of Bakersfield’s convenient city amenities.
Mountain Meadows is situated right near the southern entrance to the breathtaking Sequoia National Forest. Do not miss out on the hiking there! (The camping is pretty choice, too, as are the stunning views of the nearby mountains.) Kern River Canyon, Weedpatch Camp, and the Buena Vista Museum of Natural History are also just around the corner.
