Fort Sumter National Monument is a great place for Charleston apartment-ites to get out in the open air of the south while seeing a part of the history of the area. Bird watchers and photographers alike will enjoy the serene calmness of the area and can have a picnic or sit and read a book. Ranger talks are offered to those who reach the island by ferry, and a few exhibits display the historic resources of the area. An observation deck provides beautiful vistas of the harbor and views of the ocean. A vistor's center located in Charleston at 340 Concord Street provides much more extensive historical accounts of the area and tells the story of how the civil war broke out at Fort Sumter in 1861. It's worth a visit for Charleston apartment-ites to the museum before the trip to the actual fort and battle site. At the start of the Civil War in April of that year, Fort Sumter had scores of artillery and other weapons to defend and fight against the north. Much of the Confederate army had gathered in Charleston, where the war started. As the war wore on, however, the supplies at Fort Sumter dwindled, the fort was bombarded continuously, and was finally abandoned in February, 1865, with not much of a structure still standing. The weather can be sticky and hot in the summer, so be prepared with sunscreen and light clothing. And while it never snows at the Fort, bring a jacket from your Charleston apartment in the winter months. The park is open year round except for New Year's Day, Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day. Hours range from 11:30 am to 4 pm in December, January and February to 10 am to 5:30 pm in the summer. Check the park website or give the park a call before you leave your Charleston apartment.
