In theater, as in life, Denver apartment residents are always looking for something new and exciting. There are numerous theatrical companies around town, but few offer such fresh and provocative production as the Hunger Artist Theater, one of Denver's most celebrated companies, producing some of the most well-written, well-received plays in the city, while still keeping their edgy, shocking feel. Winning numerous awards, and receiving glowing critical reception all throughout their history, Hunger Artists Theater are the best theater company in town to keep your eye on. What makes true theater great is the artists devotion to their craft, and it's obvious from name alone that they give it their all. The name "Hunger Artist" stems from the Kafka short story, where a man would rather impress the audiences with his fasting, than to eat and lose his glory. In much the same way, the Hunger Artist Theater company would rather impress audiences with their fantastic abilities than do just about anything else. They started as a small, rag-tag group of actors, playing mostly in cafes and lounges, basically anywhere that would have them. Though they've moved on to bigger and better things, that devotion to group work and a close-knit family stays with them even today. Though they focus on contemporary, provocative plays, the Hunger Artists also have done a variety of other works, from a number of different styles and varieties. They've done works by William Shakespeare, Tom Stoppard, Edward Albee, and many other great names in theater, and producing such major plays and cycles as Angels in America and The Kentucky Cycle. One of their most popular draws, however, is their readers theater, where they dramatically read short stories or novels by famous authors. Some of the works they've included are James Joyce's The Dead, and An Evening with Edgar Allen Poe. No matter what kind of theater you're in the mood for, more than likely Hunger Artists have something right up your alley. Theater is an art form that is sometimes criminally overlooked, so if you find yourself without anything to do on a Friday night, give one of Denver's fantastic theaters a shot. An apartment-ites best bet for Denver theater, of course, would be the Hunger Artists Theater company, one of the most heralded companies in all of Denver, and one of the most popular as well.
