"Named after one of Texas' greatest heroes, General Sam Houston, Sam Houston State University was founded in 1879 less than 70 miles away from downtown Houston in the city of Huntsville. Besides Sam Houston State University or SHSU as it is commonly known, the city of Huntsville is also known for displaying a blazingly white statue of General Sam Houston that is the world's tallest statue of an american hero at 67 feet tall. Visitors from across the nation come each year to see the home and burial place of General Sam Houston and take part in the many festivals put on throughout the year. The university which was originally named Sam Houston Normal Institute has gone through many changes through the years continuing to improve it's already high standing with the community and dedication to serve and teach it's students like no other university. Enrollment has steadily increased every year with the school and as 0f 2022 has reached over 20,000 students. Known highly for it's Criminal Justice program that is just one of five specialized programs featured at the school which include arts and sciences, business administration, education, and humanities and social services. The university also has an outstanding Theatre Arts program that entertains and enlightens students from across the world. With a diverse student body university-wide, Sam Houston State offers many Undergraduate degree, Masters', and Doctoral programs. As far as living arrangements for SHSU students goes, one full academic year of on-campus residence is required for first year students. Students can choose from a variety of housing options. The price of each dorm varies upon the special options and amenities that you choose like private bathrooms, kitchen areas and living room spaces, all rooms come with air conditioning which just simply is a must in Texas. With many on-campus living options, students can simply match how much they want to spend with their specific needs when looking for a dormitory on campus.
