What is the history of Lafayette?

Lafayette has a rich cultural heritage and history that includes native populations, such as the Choctaw and Atakapa-Ishak people, and Acadian settlers from Canada. During the early 1800s, Acadian colonists established the town of Vermilionville — Lafayette’s original name. The city didn’t get its name changed until the late 1800s, when it was thriving as a railroad stop and economic hub. Lafayette also became an important site for oil companies during the 1950s. The 1980s saw the downtown area revitalized, attracting more businesses and new residents. Today, the city is thriving even more, with incredible food, festivals, job opportunities, and a low cost of living!     

How is the weather in Lafayette?

Hope you don’t mind rain! The city gets around 60 inches of rain per year. That leads to a lot of humidity, especially in summer. But those temps cool down to the 80s and 70s in fall and spring. Lows during those seasons are usually in the 50s and 60s. How do I get around town?

Most people looking for Lafayette rentals usually rely on cars to get around. That’s a more convenient transportation option if you live anywhere outside the downtown area. But you may want to look into public transportation if you plan on living in or near downtown. The Lafayette Transit System runs several bus routes around the central part of the city — though schedules are limited. If you’re leaving town, there’s Lafayette Regional Airport on the southeastern side of the city. Greyhound and Amtrak both have stations in the downtown area for traveling around the region or to other states.

What is the Lafayette commute like?

If you’re planning on driving around, commute times can vary. The average time is about 21 minutes one way — but that can end up being longer during Lafayette’s morning and evening rush hours. You may want to explore homes for rent in Lafayette that are located close to major roadways, depending on where you need to go. I-10 goes east-west through the northern part of the city. I-49 runs north-south in the northern part of town. US Route 90 runs along the eastern side of town, then cuts over through the northwestern part of town. U.S. Route 167 goes north-south through the western part of the city.

Enjoy a meal at Nash’s Restaurant located in the Comeaux House — a Queen Anne built in 1910. Or visit Cafe Vermilion for fine dining in Lafayette’s first inn, dating back to 1825! Head to the Lafayette Museum in the Alexander Mouton House to see a Greek-Revival home from the early 1800s. Other sites include the Ducrest Building, Old Lafayette City Hall, and Gordon Hotel — along with dozens of other landmarks!

We’ve already mentioned some of the city’s notable events and festivals, but there are many more! The Celtic Bayou Festival takes place in March. There’s also the Zydeco Extravaganza and the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival in May. EatLafayette from June through September gives you a great chance to enjoy the city’s eateries, featuring Cajun, Creole, Italian, and other cuisines. Visit the Acadian Park Nature Station for hiking trails, picnic areas, and other outdoor fun. Looking for arts and culture? Check out the Lafayette Science Museum, Acadiana Center for the Arts, and the Acadian Cultural Center!

Where is the best place to move in Lafayette?

That depends on what you’re looking for in Lafayette rental homes. If you want to be near all the action, Saint Streets puts you right by downtown and the University of Lafayette. You’ll have restaurants and other amenities in walking distance. Whittington Oaks offers riverfront homes with beautiful views and access to dining and shopping.
