In 1803 it became a territory of the USA. Ouachita Parish was established in 1807 and Ft. Mire was the Parish seat. Ft. Miro had its name changed to Monroe in 1819, a city that has continued to grow and prosper to date.

Monroe experiences a humid subtropical climate. Annual precipitation averages over 51 inches. The month of August gets less than 76 mm while in June the precipitation is over 5 inches. During spring and summer, heavy rain is accompanied by severe thunderstorms, hail and strong winds. In summer, there is relatively high average humidity and heat. Monroe experiences a mild winter with an average of 35 days with freezing or below freezing temperatures.

Monroe city is served by the Monroe Regional Airport that connects Monroe to other cities. The Monroe Regional Airport has a total of 3 main runways. There is a four line street railroad plus 13 fixed bus routes that serve most areas of the city. There are also 3 demand response buses that serve the disabled.

Monroe is located along Interstate 20, which is approximately 75 miles to the West of Vicksburg and 100 miles to the east of Shreveport. Because of it's size, communiting to and from work or school in this city is a little nicer than in a city with huge amounts of congestion.

The residents of Monroe are served by the Monroe News Star and The Gannett newspaper. The Monroe Free Press and The Monroe Dispatch are African-American weekly newspapers that serve the Monroe area. The KMVX-KNOE 101.9 FM, KNOE TV 8 and KMLB-KNOE 540 AM are the local emergency alert stations.
