With a hectic lifestyle that comes from living in an apartment in Philadelphia, sometime you have to just take some time and smell the roses. There are numerous parks and gardens around town to take a load off, but none are quite as breathtaking as Bartram's Gardens. The nation's oldest botanical garden is filled throughout the year with gorgeous wild flowers, statuary and other pieces of horticultural wonder, creating what is a must-see for anyone who is a fan of gardens, flowers or just the beauty of nature in general. Before coming to the gardens, historic fans can take in the house of noted horticulturalist John Bartram, and take a walk into the world of nineteenth century America, when life was simpler, and people found their pleasure is walking through gorgeous gardens such as are presented here. You can also check out interesting sites such as his bedrock cider press and his barn, though the real draw here are the beautiful gardens. There are numerous sections of gardens to take in, and the hardest decision is picking out where to begin. There's Batram's original historical garden, in which grows species native to the area, and is made up of three sections, the common flower garden, full of plants which were mostly received from other collectors, the new garden, made from discoveries he made in his travels, and the upper kitchen garden, where he kept vegetables for his medical, culinary and domestic needs. There's also the wetland, full of irises, hibiscuses, and marsh roses, right alongside the Schuylkill River, and the meadow, a wide open space full of gorgeous daisies and wild flowers. Fans of flora looking for a pleasant way to spend an afternoon away from the apartment need only take the short trip out to experience the gorgeousness of Philadelphia nature at Bartram's Gardens, the nation's oldest botanical garden, as well as one of the most beautiful.
