San Antonio, Texas. Just mentioning its name conjures both a lazy river town, complete with historic nostalgia, and a vision for the future. Hi! I'm Rhonda, your ApartmentHomeLiving.com Local Expert on San Antonio. I've lived and worked in the city. I’ve even matriculated in this extraordinary oasis, at the University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA) (Go Roadrunners!).

One of the best things about the South Texas Metroplex is the numerous smaller, independent cities that surround the historic town. Even as a child, I remember the excitement of going to
Originally founded as community towns, they now offer a calmer, quieter, and distinctly more affordable lifestyle.
Let’s take a look at a few of my favorite smaller towns that have grown considerably, now offering viable options for renters looking to escape the urban sprawl.

Fredericksburg
| Bedroom | Average Rent | Cheapest Rent | Highest Rent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio Apartments | $1,326 | $875 | $1,429 |
| 1 Bedroom Apartments | $1,328 | $465 | $1,705 |
| 2 Bedroom Apartments | $1,617 | $552 | $2,290 |
| 3 Bedroom Apartments | $1,752 | $632 | $2,423 |
Fredericksburg sits 70 miles northwest of the Alamo City on Highway 290 West, entrenched in the Texas Hill Country, but close enough to San Antonio to have the best of both worlds. Originally a small enclave, it is renowned for its lavender fields and award-winning wineries. There is also a growing artist community.
Founded in 1848, Fredericksburg has grown to a vibrant town. Tasting rooms are favorites for day trippers and locals. Whether it is apartments, lofts, or homes, renters in Fredericksburg enjoy easy access to state parks and extensive hiking trails.
It’s true that there is a bit more of a commute to San Antonio, 75 minutes or so, but its distinctive lifestyle attracts renters seeking hometown charm with upscale amenities.
The walkable Main Street is enticingly shoppable. Small local shops, galleries, and a thriving food scene with the popular Cabernet Grill Texas Wine Country Restaurant, offer undeniable charm, while more extensive shopping is close at hand.
The Fredericksburg Food & Wine Festival is a must, growing each year in recognition and accolades. Renters can look forward to Fredericksburg’s holiday celebrations, too. The Balloon Festival (November) and the Holiday Market (December) are two Central Texas favorites.
Fredericksburg is also renowned for its strong community. This small-town vibe is increasingly important to both renters and homeowners. This makes Fredericksburg well-suited for remote workers and young professionals, outdoor enthusiasts, and renters seeking an active small-town lifestyle minus the stress of the daily commute.
New Braunfels
| Bedroom | Average Rent | Cheapest Rent | Highest Rent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio Apartments | $1,105 | $815 | $1,415 |
| 1 Bedroom Apartments | $1,326 | $800 | $2,310 |
| 2 Bedroom Apartments | $1,682 | $800 | $4,355 |
| 3 Bedroom Apartments | $2,091 | $1,275 | $6,635 |
| 4 Bedroom Apartments | $2,645 | $1,845 | $10,000+ |
Some say that New Braunfels leans more toward Austin than San Antonio, but located approximately 30 miles northeast of the Alamo, along the Interstate Highway 35 corridor, New Braunfels has contributed to the history and culture of San Antonio.
Once a sleepy Central Texas town founded in 1845, the 45 square mile area is now one of the fastest-growing small cities in Texas. New Braunfels successfully combines historic cottage charm with modern growth, with new apartment developments.
The walkable downtown features live music, shops, and specialty restaurants. Some dish out Southern cuisine while others cater to contemporary tastes. There is even a piano bar and an upscale wine bar with speakeasy vibes.
New Braunfels is also about the outdoors; the Guadalupe and Comal Rivers are a tubing and SCUBA Mecca. Both during family vacation visits and later in college, lazy days on either of these rivers were a must. Nearby, the famous Schlitterbahn Waterpark provides a respite to sweltering Texas summers.
Festivals rule in New Braunfels. One of my favorites is the New Braunfels Oktoberfest, celebrating the strong German heritage of central and southern Texas.
Renters are drawn to New Braunfels because it blends numerous lifestyle options and outdoor recreation. The newer apartment communities can be found in one, two, and three-bedroom options, and there is, of course, a manageable commute to San Antonio.
This German-heritage city offers working professionals, young couples, and remote workers seeking more lifestyle amenities without the cost of living in a major city.
Castroville
| Bedroom | Average Rent | Cheapest Rent | Highest Rent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio Apartments | $930 | $640 | $1,160 |
| 1 Bedroom Apartments | $1,172 | $760 | $1,784 |
| 2 Bedroom Apartments | $1,588 | $999 | $2,245 |
| 3 Bedroom Apartments | $1,872 | $1,114 | $2,631 |
| 4 Bedroom Apartments | $2,057 | $1,227 | $2,631 |
Twenty-five miles due west of San Antonio along Highway 90 is the small city of Castroville. Sometimes called the "Little Alsace of Texas," Castroville was founded in 1844 by French diplomat Henry Castro.
The Alsacean architecture, a blend of German and French influences that was popular in the late 1800s, creates a European atmosphere. Castroville reminds me of open-air shopping villages throughout western Europe that are filled with local boutiques, family-owned restaurants, and a slower pace of life.
Art and antiquing are popular pastimes in this cozy hamlet. Castroville holds a special place in my heart as my aunt founded and ran a local art and antique store in the heart of town for more than a decade.
One of my favorite lunch spots is Castroville BBQ, with generous portions and true Texas flavor. Another local haunt is Sammay’s Restaurant, serving the area for almost a century.
Castroville residents number roughly 3,500. But there are ample choices for renters. Small historic houses and apartment complexes are interspersed with new, upscale, amenity-filled homes. But it also has countless things to do, such as the St. Louis Day Festival, which has been celebrated for over 150 years.
While the city is growing, which inevitably means higher costs, the current affordability for renters makes this small town highly desirable for both San Antonio commuters and remote workers.
Boerne
| Bedroom | Average Rent | Cheapest Rent | Highest Rent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio Apartments | $1,042 | $802 | $1,162 |
| 1 Bedroom Apartments | $1,291 | $914 | $2,274 |
| 2 Bedroom Apartments | $1,615 | $989 | $3,580 |
| 3 Bedroom Apartments | $1,965 | $1,399 | $4,463 |
Boerne, pronounced BURN-ee, is a short 30-mile drive to the northwest along Interstate 10. Its popularity has strengthened, marking it as one of the lower the Texas Hill Country's most desirable communities. Founded in 1849, it was named after German satirist Ludwig Börne in 1952. I remember the Boerne as ranch land, as my family had a small cattle ranch there. My father loved it for its wide open spaces and unmistakable blue skies.
The area has definitely grown since then. Its downtown is one of the area’s largest draws, offering renters in Boerne numerous options and amenities. The award-winning Hill Country Mile is a promenade of shops, restaurants, galleries, and historic Cibolo Creek architecture. And take it from any local, the monthly Market Days can compete with any Farmer’s Market or street-side shopping.
Boerne is also all about the outdoors. Nature lovers can take advantage of the city’s proximity to nearby caves, including Cascade Caverns and Cave without a Name. There are three established trailheads in Boerne, including the scenic Cibolo Trail. The name Cibolo is taken from the Cibolo Creek. A small water source that runs through Boerne. The name itself is Spanish, meaning buffalo or bison.
Rental apartments and rental homes near Boerne cost more than other communities, but remain affordable and a competitive housing option versus the San Antonio Market. The city is a growing choice for commuting professionals and renters prioritizing quality of life over the lowest rent.
Seguin
| Bedroom | Average Rent | Cheapest Rent | Highest Rent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio Apartments | $955 | $815 | $1,500 |
| 1 Bedroom Apartments | $1,068 | $725 | $1,585 |
| 2 Bedroom Apartments | $1,284 | $825 | $1,710 |
| 3 Bedroom Apartments | $1,500 | $999 | $1,950 |
| 4 Bedroom Apartments | $4,066 | $1,449 | $10,000+ |
Once again, Interstate -10 brings us to a renter’s haven. Sequin is located 37 miles east of San Antonio along this heavily trafficked, state-wide thoroughfare. Seguin was founded in 1838, shortly after Texas's independence. This makes the small city one of the Lone Star State’s older towns. Extraordinarily proud of its heritage, the community blends historic Texas character with modern conveniences.
Seguin is growing. In fact, the city has experienced steady residential and industrial growth over the past decade.
Highly independent, Seguin offers affordable living costs while retaining daily access to San Antonio and major employers such as Cargill, Caterpillar, and is in close proximity to Randolph Air Force Base.
Renters in Seguin will find consistently lower housing costs. It is best for budget-conscious renters, commuters who work in northern San Antonio, and first-time renters looking to establish themselves. It is also a relatively short commute to Sea World, Six Flags, and the University of Texas San Antonio, making it a strong rental option for students.
A Final Overview of Renting Near San Antonio

Finding the perfect spot to set down roots and create your life is always difficult. I must have moved at least a dozen times during college and my initial professional life.
For those renters looking for the best housing values with proximity to San Antonio, the small towns of Seguin or Castroville are worth taking a peek at. For renters seeking a short commute and a packed calendar, New Braunfels offers an energetic downtown, festivals, and outdoor recreation.
Boerne appeals to renters prioritizing exceptional quality of life and Hill Country vistas. However, most views come with a price, and the Boerne area rental costs are noticeably higher. They can easily compete with San Antonio.
For renters whose priorities include scenic beauty, historic character, and a relaxed pace of life, Fredericksburg takes pride of place. Granted, it is the farthest community from San Antonio, and can be considered a specialized rental market. However, Fredericksburg has a unique blend of culture, amenities, and old-world charm, which makes it an outstanding choice for those who value lifestyle over proximity to the city.
