1. Cisco Systems

Cisco’s headquarters sit comfortably in North San Jose, smack in the middle of one of the area’s largest tech corridors. Cisco may not be as flashy as some of Silicon Valley’s newer names, but it’s been a cornerstone of the tech scene for decades and is still deeply influential.

Folks who go to work for Cisco tend to stay there a while, which really says something. It’s a fantastic place to build a rewarding career without feeling like you’re also constantly running on fumes.

North San Jose

If you want your daily commute to feel practically non-existent, North San Jose is really the best place to start your search for the right living situation. It’s positively built for tech workers, so think newer apartment complexes, complete with all the amenities you could want.

North San Jose also offers immediate access to major roadways, including Highway 101, I-880, and CA-237, so getting to Cisco (or just about anywhere else) is pretty simple.

Berryessa

Berryessa is almost as well-connected as North San Jose, but it’s a little more residential-feeling – perfect if you’re looking for a good balance between homey and convenient. It’s also a great fit for any Cisco employee who plans on using public transportation.

The big draw of living in Berryessa is the Berryessa/North San Jose BART station, which keeps you connected to the larger Bay Area without the need to own a car of your own.

Alviso

Located just a few minutes outside of San Jose proper is Alviso. It’s the type of place that feels like a peaceful little pocket quietly tucked away from the rest of the world. Or at least that’s the case until you realize it’s minutes from a major tech campus.

Living in Alviso puts you within easy reach of lots of open space, walking trails, and places like Alviso Marina County Park. Perfect for days you just need a little extra room to breathe!

North Valley

Located just east of San Jose’s main tech corridor, North Valley is terrific for those looking to minimize commuting time without also living right next to their place of business. Most residents here rely on their own transportation, so the access to Highway 680 and Montague Expressway is a big perk.

This is another neighborhood with a pleasant residential feel, plus easy access to amenities like grocery stores, dining, and shopping centers.

Warm Springs

If you don’t mind living just outside the immediate Cisco campus area, take a closer look at Warm Springs, just north of North San Jose. You get straightforward access to I-880 and CA-237, plus the Warm Springs/South Fremont BART station, so commuting is super simple.

You’ll also have a variety of townhomes and newer apartments to choose from. There are lots of everyday essentials nearby, as well, including places to shop.

2. Google

Whether you’ll be working in Mountain View or one of the other nearby campuses, there’s a certain prestige factor associated with Google employment. Google is innovative and fast-moving. It certainly carries that “dream job” energy, thanks to golden opportunities to really shape how people interact with the world every day.

But working at Google also comes alongside one of the bigger Silicon Valley challenges – the commute. San Jose neighborhoods with strong freeway or transit access are your best bet for that reason.

Downtown San Jose

Energy, convenience, and plenty of fun things to do after work are just a few of the perks of choosing this neighborhood. You’ve got restaurants, coffee shops, bars, events, and more, all within easy walking distance.

Transportation-wise, you’re also well-connected, with access to light rail, regional transit, and Caltrain options.

Willow Glen

Willow Glen comes attached to a more grounded feel than the rest of the Silicon Valley area, but that’s exactly what’s awesome about it. I love the walkable main street here, as well as the local boutiques, plus all the trees.

You have access to multiple main roads from here, so the commute is manageable, especially if you drive.

West San Jose

Looking for a spot to set up shop that’s as strategically located as it is livable? Take a closer look at the options in West San Jose. You’re right next to multiple surface streets, as well as Highway 280 and 85 – perfect for tackling a regular Mountain View commute.

Santana Row and Valley Fair are also just a quick jaunt away, so your weekends are totally covered.

Cambrian Park

Cambrian Park offers you a quieter, suburban feel, while still keeping your daily commute good and reasonable. Residents here love it for its excellent shopping and residential feel, plus its easy access to major roads.

Be sure to check it out, if you want space and calm without the need to also go too far south.

3. Adobe

Located right in Downtown San Jose, it doesn’t get much better than Adobe when it comes to exciting tech giants to work for, especially if you’re looking for an option with a unique energy to it.

Adobe is still all about innovation, of course. However, it also has a stellar reputation for creativity, balance, and being design-forward. Adobe attracts people who truly care about the things they’re building, not just how fast they can build them.

SoFA

The SoFA (South First Area) district is truly the spot where Downtown San Jose gets interesting. In fact, this is actually where I go when I’m in the mood to visit a couple of art galleries, maybe followed by a cultural event or a little live music.

In fact, SoFA is really the place to be if you’re a creative at heart and want to feel connected to the area’s artsy side.

Japantown

Looking for a quieter alternative to downtown that won’t require you to sacrifice your proximity? Japantown just might be the place for you.

It’s one of the last remaining historic Japantowns in the United States, and it’s amazing. The shops, the food, and even the general vibe of the community are all living proof of that. Plus, you can walk or even bike to Adobe in minutes.

Rose Garden

The San Jose Municipal Rose Garden is seriously one of my favorite spots in the entire city. It’s also the very center of this enchanting neighborhood. You’ll find gorgeous tree-lined streets and historic homes here.

In fact, I can’t think of a better place for an Adobe employee to live if they’re looking for peace and charm.

Burbank

Burbank is one of San Jose’s most underrated neighborhoods, especially if you’ll be working for Adobe while you’re in the city. It’s centrally located and close to major roads. It’s also a lot more affordable, relative to other options.

Burbank lacks the flashy amenities you might get in other neighborhoods, but it more than makes up for that with practicality.

Spartan Keyes

Situated just southeast of downtown, Spartan Keyes is steadily growing with lots of newer apartment options to consider. It’s also close to San Jose State, a real advantage if you’re thinking of continuing your education at any point.

4. Apple

If you’ll be working at Apple’s headquarters in nearby Cupertino, prepare to help develop products that define entire categories. The working environment is intense here, but it’s also deeply focused. You’ll also enjoy a company culture that values both precision and design.

Because of its location, most Apple employees looking to live here look at West and South San Jose first. This helps make sure commutes remain manageable while avoiding Cupertino premiums.

Santana Row

For prospective Apple employees who value lifestyle as much as they do location, Santana Row is an amazing neighborhood to take a close look at. Stevens Creek Boulevard and I-280 keep commuting manageable.

Plus, sublime restaurants, fantastic shopping, and even a robust nightlife scene – they’re all built right into the neighborhood. In other words, you can easily transition from your workday to the rest of your life here in five minutes or so.

Winchester

Winchester is located just south of Santana Row, so you’ll enjoy the same easy access to both Stevens Creek Boulevard and I-280, as well as nearby surface streets. Your work commute stays straightforward as a result.

Housing is a mixture of small rental properties, apartments, and residential streets. You’re also within spitting distance of lots of shopping and dining options, not to mention the Winchester Mystery House (one of my favorite spots in the city).

Edenvale

Edenvale doesn’t have quite the same proximity as similar neighborhoods do, but it makes up for that by offering residents lots and lots of space. Located in South San Jose, it’s characterized by newer developments, wider streets, and a much quieter atmosphere than more central neighborhoods have.

You’ll also have easy access to Highway 85 and 101, so your drive stays approachable, especially if on the road outside of peak hours.

Blossom Valley

Looking for a neighborhood that brings lots of balance to the table? You’re definitely covered in Blossom Valley. It’s positively built for convenience, with lots of shopping centers, eateries, and services clustered nearby.

A commute to Apple will most likely mean going north on Highway 85 or 101 – not the shortest drive, but certainly a nice, direct one.

5. NVIDIA

Recent years have seen NVIDIA becoming one of Silicon Valley’s most forward-facing companies, especially in alignment with its roles in AI and high-performance computing. A job here means working right on the cusp of cutting-edge development, surrounded by folks who are always a few steps ahead of the pack.

Working for NVIDIA can be demanding, though, so where you live counts for a lot. The company’s Santa Clara location means north and central San Jose neighborhoods are generally the best fits.

Santa Teresa

Situated in South San Jose, Santa Teresa brings something to the mix that not every Silicon Valley neighborhood does – unparalleled serenity. It’s an excellent place to live if you love the outdoors, thanks to nearby Santa Teresa County Park.

Commuting to work from here usually means taking Highway 85 north and then connecting to 101 or 237, depending on your chosen route. Expect housing options – from apartments to townhomes to residential communities – to offer more space than you’d get centrally.

Silver Creek

Silver Creek leans a little more upscale than some of your other options. Think stunning hillside views and a nice, private feel. It’s also not as close to NVIDIA as other neighborhoods. But if you’re willing to sacrifice a small degree of commute convenience for environment, don’t sleep on Silver Creek.

The homes here are bigger, and the streets are quieter. The overall pace of life is slower here, too. Expect to rely on driving to get around, including commutes via Highway 101 or 680, but know that the atmosphere you’ll be coming home to more than makes up for that.

Evergreen

Evergreen is one of the more established neighborhoods in East San Jose, as it’s well-known for its schools, parks, and new developments. It’s stable and delightfully residential. It’s also flexible, with a mix of houses, townhomes, and apartments to offer.

Your commute to NVIDIA will involve taking Highway 101 or 680, depending on what route you take.

Communications Hill

If you love your neighborhoods visually distinctive, then you’ll definitely like living in Communications Hill. It’s built into the hillside itself. It’s also known for its gorgeous views and all the beautiful staircases to be found throughout the community. It just feels different from the rest of San Jose in the most wonderful way.

Housing reflects a nice mix of newer homes and apartment options. Most come with beautiful views, too – just the thing for commuters who want uniqueness without losing access to what’s best about living in the city.
