Vero Beach Overview

If you live in one of the many apartments in Vero Beach, you have the best of Florida right outside your front door. This beachside community of 17,000 is the county seat of Indian River County on the state’s legendary Treasure Coast. It spans a barrier island, the Indian River Lagoon and a westward-reaching mainland stretch. Why live in Vero Beach? The big attraction is the Atlantic beaches, and there’s also nature, wildlife, hiking and biking trails. It’s not a large town, but its fortunate location on the Treasure Coast allows for a generous assortment of amenities and cultural opportunities.

What is the history of Vero Beach?

Many would say that the history of Vero Beach began with a major shipwreck: 11 Spanish ships that went down in a hurricane in 1715. Coins from the disaster still wash ashore today and give the Treasure Coast its name. The actual town of Vero wasn’t chartered until 1919, and it was renamed Vero Beach in 1925. A naval training base was established during World War II, and the locale later became the spring training facility of the baseball Dodgers. Spring games continued until 2008, and thus Vero Beach is the home of Historic Dodgertown.

How is the weather in Vero Beach?

Weather is a big draw for this part of Florida. It’s subtropical with hot, humid summers and winters that are mild and dry. Daily high temperatures average above 80 degrees from April through October. In the winter months, highs are typically in the 70s with overnight lows in the 50s. Freezing temperatures are unusual but can occur. There is a rainy season from June to September.

How do I get around town?

Most residents rely on automobiles for commuting and daily travel. There is some bus service through GoLine Bus. A small downtown area on the mainline side of the lagoon is reasonably walkable. There is good recreational bicycling, but only some of the city streets are bike-friendly. The town has a small airfield, Vero Beach Regional Airport, just to the northwest. Service is provided by Elite Airways and Breeze Airways. The Florida East Coast Railway runs north-south through the community.

What is the Vero Beach commute like?

While Vero Beach doesn’t have as much snowbird and tourist activity as many other Florida coastal communities, traffic congestion is still an issue. It’s at its worst in the key tourist times of late winter and early spring. Florida Highway 60 runs east-west though the community, coming from Central Florida, crossing the Indian River Lagoon and terminating on North Hutchinson Island. America’s East Coast Main Street, US Highway 1, runs north-south and has several major congestion spots. Two bridges connect the mainland to the barrier island. On the island, scenic Highway A1A passes through along its meander through Florida’s beautiful barrier islands.

What are the local media outlets?

As a small town, Vero doesn’t have a major print newspaper or hometown TV station, but it’s served by the online newspaper VeroNews.com. There’s also a Treasure Coast online publication, tcpalm.com, which is affiliated with USA Today. There are a number of local radio stations, including WQOL for classic hits, Christian station WSCF, WGYL with adult contemporary, WJKD for popular music and several news and talk stations such as WAXE, WCZR and WTTB.

Why live in Vero Beach, FL?

The big attractions in Vero Beach are sun, water and outdoor living. There are three main public beaches as well as free public access trails and walkways that provide access to the oceanside. Water lovers have more to appreciate than just the Atlantic Ocean. The Indian River Lagoon, part of the Intracoastal Waterway, provides a waterfront to both the mainland and barrier island. There are numerous bars and restaurants where you can relax and enjoy watching the wildlife. For those who prefer to venture out on the water, there’s fishing, diving, water skiing, kayaking and just about anything you can do from a boat. Vero Beach epitomizes the Florida lifestyle, which is casual and outdoors-oriented.

What Vero Beach landmarks should I see?

When you talk about Vero Beach landmarks, it’s natural to start with the beaches. Humiston Beach Park has clean, welcoming facilities and is located close to shopping opportunities on Ocean Drive. You haven’t experienced local history until you visit the McLarty Museum, which tells the story of 1715 shipwreck and the tale of its survivors. There’s also the National Navy SEAL Museum, located at a place where the divers actually trained. Not every landmark in Vero is related to the ocean: the Vero Beach Museum of Art has an eclectic mix of paintings, glass, sculpture and photography.

What is there to do around Vero Beach?

Most newcomers to Vero Beach will make it a priority to enjoy the water, either at the oceanfront beaches or along the lagoon. There’s also the Manatee Observation & Education Center, where you can learn more about these charming water mammals. Vero Beach is a prime loggerhead sea turtle nesting area, and there are guided turtle watches in June and July at the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge. Vero isn’t all sand, sun and spray, though. For example, the Wine and Ale Trial is a visual and gustatory experience involving the local winery and the growing craft beer scene.

Any annual festivals or Vero Beach events to know?

Throughout the year, there are activities at the Indian River County Fairgrounds. There’s Vero Beach Oktoberfest in, of course, October. The Vero Beach Gun Show takes place in September with antiques and collectibles as well as commercial and retail offerings. The Treasure Coast Flea Market and Boat Show occurs in October. There’s also an annual seafood festival as well as arts and crafts expositions.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Vero Beach is centrally located along the Atlantic coastline and is an ideal launching point for adventures in either direction. Hop on I-95 or choose the scenic, slower-paced drive along Highway A1A. If you travel north, one of your first stops might be Sebastian Inlet, a favorite fishing and dolphin-watching spot. Further north is the Space Coast and the Kennedy Space Center. While you’re there, don’t miss the amazing fauna to be seen at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. Turning inland, it’s just over 100 miles to Orlando, home of Disney World and many of Florida’s most famous attractions.

Where is the best place to move in Vero Beach?

Vero Beach is a community that runs mostly east to west, starting with the beach-oriented neighborhoods of North Hutchinson Island and continuing through the town’s central area and on west toward I-95. If you live in Vero Beach apartments, you enjoy a small-town atmosphere tilted more toward year-round residents than to tourists and retirees. Rental opportunities are scattered throughout the town, some in condo and townhouse HOAs as well as traditional apartment buildings. Many Vero communities are upscale, particularly on the island and in the northwest part of the city. The more affordable communities tend to be on the west side of town, farther from the beach and closer to the freeway. There are also clusters of communities along US 1 to the south. No matter where you move into apartments in Vero Beach, however, you’re going to find pleasant weather and easy access to water. Residents of this part of Florida say that every day they wake to another day in paradise.
