Woodside Overview

Woodside NY is a small community that is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The community offers a wonderful mix of small-town tranquility and access to big-city restaurants, shows, and attractions. With one of the most comprehensive public transportation systems in the world, most residents never feel the need to own a car. Woodside NY is a quiet residential community with great commuter access to areas like Manhattan.

What is the history of Woodside?

With a population of just over 45,000, Woodside NY has all the benefits of a small town and big city. Originally largely marshlands, the area was converted into rich farmland in the early 1800s after it was properly drained. As the 20th century dawned, transportation advances and real estate developments began to lead to a thriving community of single and multi-family units. Through the years and up to the modern era, Woodside remains a strong and mostly residential community.

How is the weather in Woodside?

The climate in the New York City area is mild and sunny most of the year, averaging 19 more days of clear skies than the US average. As for precipitation, the community gets about 47 inches of rain and 25 inches of snow each year. That is slightly less snow and nine more inches of rain than the US average. The hottest month of the year is July, with average high temperatures just over 84║ F. By contrast, the coldest month of the year is January, with low temperatures reaching nearly 26 ░F.

How do I get around town?

One good thing about living in the shadow of New York City is the wide number of transportation options. Only 22% of commuters drive their own car alone to work, with more than 56.5% depending on mass transit. Around 10% of commuters walk to the job. Partly as a result, the average commute time in New York City is 40.8 minutes versus the US average of only 26.4. With largely walkable communities and mass transit options including busses and subway trains, most people can survive without a personal vehicle.

What is the Woodside commute like?

For those that are driving, several major highways go through Woodside. Grand Central Parkway (I-278) runs along the northern and eastern borders of the community. NY 25A and Queens Blvd (NY 25) run through the community from east to west. Commuters who want to avoid the heavy rush hour traffic altogether will find several subway trains moving through the community, several making stops at the popular Woodside Station.

What are the local media outlets?

New York City is one of the largest markets in the world for media. In addition to the New York Times and Wall Street Journal newspapers, some of the largest media companies in the world have headquarters in the NYC area. Also, niche markets based on culture, language, and special interests are more likely to find alternative publications in NYC than anywhere else in the world. CBS, NBC, Fox, and ABC all have local television affiliates. No matter what you want to read, watch, or listen to, you will find access to it living in Woodside Queens.

Why live in Woodside, NY?

Woodside is a great community because it gives you all the benefits of living in a large city while enjoying the peace of small towns. Because the neighborhood is mostly residential, it doesn't have the 24-hour bustle reputation shared by much of the NYC metro area. At the same time, nearly anything you could want is a short train ride away.

What Woodside landmarks should I see?

Although it is mostly a residential area, there are a few landmarks that residents of apartments in Woodside can enjoy. History buffs may enjoy a visit to the Moore-Jackson Cemetery, featuring colonial-era graves. Outdoors lovers can enjoy public areas such as Woodside Memorial Plaza and Doughboy Plaza. St. Michael's Playground is a great place for the youth of all ages to enjoy fresh air activities.

What is there to do around Woodside?

In addition to the outdoor parks, those living in Woodside apartments. Food lovers will crave the variety of delicious restaurant cuisine in the area, including Indian, Thai, Mexican, Japanese, Filipino, and American. After residents finish eating they can visit Ebs Museum, Bowlero Queens bowling alley, or learn to scuba dive with Superdive Scuba.

Any annual festivals or Woodside events to know?

As a melting pot of cultures and tastes, the New York City area is widely known for its festivals. Woodside in particular hosts the Woodside-Queens Festival in May of each year. The Festival generally covers several blocks and hosts nearly 300 vendors with a wide variety of products, rides, and food.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Even though the New York City area has just about everything you could ever need, there may come times when you want to leave Woodside for a vacation. During the spring and summer, amusement park lovers can enjoy the classic-themed Victorian Gardens Amusement Park in nearby Central Park. As part of the US east coast, there are several beach areas, including Coney Island Beach and Rockaway Beach.

Where is the best place to move in Woodside?

Within the community of Woodside, the majority of apartments will be found toward the middle of the city, between Northern Blvd and Queens Blvd. Interestingly enough most of the concentrations of apartment buildings are within two short blocks of a major subway line. Apartments also seem to congregate within a few blocks of the I-278. The combination provides quick access to a major transportation line regardless of the main method of commute. New residents to apartments in Woodside would do well to pick locations that provide fast access to travel routes.
