It has a history that dates back to before America became independent and has remained an important part of Pennsylvania and the country as a whole. What is the history of Harrisburg?

The city of Harrisburg had humble beginnings as an 800-acre plot of land owned by John Harris. His son decided to plan and build a town dedicated to his father (thus the name Harrisburg). Harrisburg was officially incorporated in 1791 and became the state’s capital in 1812. It swiftly gained importance due to its strategic location in a pass of a mountain ridge on the Susquehanna River, and it played a significant role as a training center during the Civil War. Since then, Harrisburg has experienced its fair share of industrial and cultural ups and downs.

How is the weather in Harrisburg?

Harrisburg has a humid, four-season continental climate. Summers can be hot, with an average of 21 days over 90 °F, but fall is much more pleasant with more comfortable temperatures and humidity. Like most of the Northeast, winters are quite cold, with an average of 30.6 inches of snow every year. In general, precipitation is distributed nicely throughout the year, so there are no particularly dry or wet seasons.

How do I get around town?

There are many ways to get around Harrisburg. Uber, walking, and driving your own car are always options, but Harrisburg also has a decent public transit system called Capital Area Transit (CAT). It provides commuter rail and public bus services within the city. There are also many ways to get in and out of Harrisburg. The intercity bus service connects Harrisburg to other cities in Pennsylvania and surrounding states, and Amtrak provides rail service between Harrisburg, New York, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia. You can also use the Harrisburg International Airport for your long distance travels.

What is the Harrisburg commute like?

Several interstates can be used to drive into Harrisburg. I-83 approaches Harrisburg from the south and also terminates here. This terminus meets the eastern terminus of the concurrence of I-81 and US Route 322. I-81 cuts through the northern part of the city in an east-west direction. US Route 22 from the north transfers to Route 230 which cuts right through Harrisburg. The average commute is about 25 minutes.

What are the local media outlets?

Harrisburg is served by two daily newspapers: The Patriot-News, which is published in Harrisburg itself, and The Sentinel, which is published in Carlisle and mostly serves the western suburbs of Harrisburg. The city also has a weekly, more generally informative newspaper called Press and Journal. Harrisburg also has its fair share of radio stations and programs. The most popular station is WHP 580 which presents news, traffic, and weather information, and the most popular show is RJ Harris in the Morning.

Harrisburg is home to the Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex, which acts as the center of government and the location of the state’s capitol building, as well as the state’s library and archives. The capitol building is as much a piece of art as it is a governmental building, as it contains many Pennsylvania-themed sculptures, stained glass windows, and murals. An important National Historic Landmark for you to see is the John Harris – Simon Cameron Mansion situated on the Susquehanna River. It’s one of the oldest buildings in Harrisburg and features the histories of families important to the founding of the city.

What is there to do around Harrisburg?

There are many things to occupy your time when you’re living in apartments in Harrisburg. Go shopping at the Broad Street Market, which is one of the oldest working farmers’ markets in the US. Or you could simply stroll down the Susquehanna and take in the sights there, such as the Pennsylvania Holocaust Memorial and Fort Hunter Mansion and Park. Downtown also has a thriving night life that attracts jazz festivals and excellent nightclubs.

Any annual festivals or Harrisburg events to know?

Every January you can check out the Pennsylvania Farm Show, which happens to be the biggest free indoor agricultural exhibition in the US. And on Labor Day weekend you can enjoy the Kipona Festival in Riverfront Park. The location of the festival on the Susquehanna is quite deliberate as the name of the festival, Kipona, comes from the American Indian name for “sparkling waters.”

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Hersheypark is one of the most famous theme parks in Pennsylvania, and it’s located only fifteen miles outside Harrisburg. The town of Gettysburg is also less than an hour’s drive away. Gettysburg was the site of the turning point of the Civil War, and the modern town cherishes and proudly displays its history. You can explore the fields where the battles were fought and then use the night to go on a ghost tour. Though Gettysburg is small, there is much to see.

Where is the best place to move in Harrisburg?

If you’re looking to live near lots of restaurants and nightlife, downtown apartments in Harrisburg are perfect for you, especially if you’ll also be working downtown. Living downtown will also put you near Market Square, the commercial center of the city and the public transport hub. If you’re not a fan of city living, you might want to check out more suburban areas like Hershey, Mechanicsburg, and Camp Hill. They offer a bit more space and smaller schools, and commute times aren’t too bad. No matter where you want to live in Harrisburg, there’s sure to be an apartment that’s right for you.
