Ontario Overview

Located in San Bernardino County, Ontario, California is a short drive to both Los Angeles and rugged wilderness. A city with rich history, many transportation options, and gorgeous weather, Ontario is an excellent choice for families, young professionals, and retirees alike.

What is the history of Ontario?

"Ontario was formally incorporated in 1891, but it had been settled in 1881 by brothers George and William Chaffey. The Chaffeys sought to create a carefully planned ""model colony."" The town quickly attracted citrus farmers, who appreciated the warm climate and abundant land. The city has since attracted settlers from all over the world, drawn to its opportunities in farming and other industries."

How is the weather in Ontario?

Ontario's climate is semi-arid, the city is warm year-round, and summer days often exceed 90 degrees. However, humidity is typically low, and the city has few rainy days. Like much of southern California, Ontario experiences far more hours of sunlight each year than most of the country.

How do I get around town?

Ontario is home to Ontario International Airport. The airport is an important hub for cargo shipping, but it also provides domestic and international passenger flights. The city is also served by Amtrak and Metrolink trains, which connect riders to Los Angeles and other nearby cities, and a bus line that serves most of the city.

What is the Ontario commute like?

Ontario is served by numerous important freeways, including Interstate 10 and the Pomona Freeway, which run east-west, and Interstate 15, which runs north-south. The most important street within the city is Euclid Avenue (State Route 83), a north-south corridor that still includes the wide, grassy medians designed by the Chaffey brothers.

What are the local media outlets?

Like most of southern California, Ontario's television and radio is largely controlled by the Los Angeles market. However, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, published in Rancho Cucamonga, provides a more local focus for the area.

Why live in Ontario, CA?

Ontario is an excellent city to call home because it's approximately halfway between Los Angeles, with its vibrant culture and entertainment, and the outdoor recreation and serene quiet of the desert wilderness. Of course, the city itself has a lot to offer, with many thriving industries, a robust transportation infrastructure, and community events for all ages.

What Ontario landmarks should I see?

Ontario's most famous site is the Ontario Mills shopping mall, one of the largest in southern California. The city is also home to many colleges, including National University, Chapman University, and the University of La Verne's Law School.

What is there to do around Ontario?

The Cititzens Busines Bank Arena typically hosts over 125 events each year, ranging from sporting events to concerts. The arena is home to several minor league teams, including the Ontario Reign hockey team, the Ontario Fury playing indoor soccer, and the Agua Caliente Clippers in basketball.

Any annual festivals or Ontario events to know?

Ontario's All-States Picnic is held every Independence Day, it was originally intended to celebrate the diversity of the city's residents, though it has evolved into a more general civic celebration. The city's churches also host a famously elaborate nativity scene each December, and a locally famous tradition is the Rotary Club's Pancake Breakfast and Car Show each June.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Ontario is about two hours away from Joshua Tree National Park, and even closer to several national forests and other outdoor recreation opportunities. The city is also not far from beaches on the Pacific Ocean. Also, since the city is served by an international airport, it's easy to travel throughout the country or world.

Where is the best place to move in Ontario?

Ontario has designated seven historic districts, and identified a few more neighborhoods as candidates for this title. Designating historic districts is an important step to help preserve the architecture and character of the neighborhood, and prevent excessive development. These areas, which include Historic Downtown, College Park, Armsley Square, and sections of Euclid Avenue, include some of the most desirable apartments in Ontario because of their rich history, walkable geography, and friendly atmosphere.
