While apartment dwelling is certainly preferable to most than living in the great outdoors, there's most definitely something to be said for spending a night sleeping out under the stars. Telling ghost stories around a campfire, taking a moonlit walk with that special someone...great memories are made of these, and many a nostalgic trip has been had at Portage Lakes State Park. A historical area that dates back to the late 1800's, Portage Lakes is an all-encompassing campground filled with activities as well as plenty of opportunity for leisure time. The Lakes themselves are an obvious draw, lending themselves to a variety of fun including swimming, fishing, boating and even water skiing. Of course, the water's natural beauty is enough of a draw on its own for most, making for stunning sunsets and an ideal painting muse for many an artist. Weekends are dominated by families and couples camping, and the park offers close to 75 prime spots. All include a picnic table as well as a fire pit, with the park divided in half for both pet friendly and animal-free areas. A myriad of activities are available for campers, including performances in their open air theater, with the most famous of all being the park's Christmas in July celebration. So don't forget to toss that plastic Frosty in the car as you leave your apartment - he might just be the key to bragging rights for many camping experiences to come.
