Part of the appeal of living in New York is easy access to the large number of live bands performing almost every night, and Albany is little exception. From dive bars to historically-rich concert halls, there are a large number of venues for the Albany-area apartment-ite to explore, although perhaps none is as revered among the locals as long-running indie shrine Valentine's. Having survived the ups-and-downs of the live music scene for close to twenty years, Valentine's consists of two floors that operate on an almost nightly basis. The larger upstairs hall is capable of holding close to 500 fans, and has hosted some of the biggest names in the indie, punk and alt-country realms, including Mike Watt, The Damned and The Figgs. Downstairs doubles as a working-class bar and smaller stage, where regulars gather for happy hour specials of PBR on tap to argue over baseball dominance between the Mets and Yankees. If you're lucky you might even spot Valentine's owner Howard himself, a cheerful and true music lover if there ever was one. While live music is the obvious primary draw at Valentine's, their insanely hip and diverse jukebox is not to be overlooked. Albums by the Rollins Stones, the Replacements and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion sit snuggly next to Americana legends like Johnny Cash and X, and odds are good you'll be hard-pressed to find another venue in all of New York state that still gives you five plays for two bucks. So for Albany-area apartment-ites looking for a night of hard rocking jams that won't leave your rent money lacking, give Valentine's a shot...and a beer.
