What is the history of Atlanta?

Atlanta is a relatively young city. It wasn't founded until 1837 as a major railroad terminus. It was initially named after the governor's daughter, Martha, but soon became known as Atlanta because of its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. As a railway hub, Atlanta was a significant battle site during the US Civil War. Its fall on September 1, 1864, after a months-long battle, represents the beginning of the war's end, with General Robert E. Lee surrendering the following spring.

How is the weather in Atlanta?

Summers in Atlanta are hot and humid, with quick and unexpected afternoon showers common. Those who prefer to stay out of the heat spend mid-day in an air-conditioned home or office and enjoy outdoor activities in the early morning or evening when it's cooler. That changes in winter when days stay mild and pleasant throughout the season. It rarely goes below freezing during daytime hours(or at night, for that matter), so you don't have to worry about the hassle of snow or ice keeping you stuck inside when choosing homes for rent in Atlanta.

How do I get around town?

Atlanta has a rapid rail transit system called MARTA. It carries you between major hubs in the city and out to the neighborhoods on the East and West. If Marta doesn't get you within walking distance of your destination, you can take the Atlanta Streetcar, which loops through the Downtown Atlanta and Entertainment district, hop on the bus line, or hail a cab. Choosing a rental in Downtown Atlanta is very walkable choice with a Walkscore of 90, but it is not ideal for biking with a "somewhat bikeable" ranking.

What is the Atlanta commute like?

Interstate 20, 85, and 75 intersect in Atlanta. If you need to drive from one side to the other, that's generally the fastest way. The average commuter lives about 12 miles from work, so they travel 24 miles daily, which averages out to a little over 1-hour commute round trip daily. But since it's an average, your commute could be longer. So, it's critical to consider both proximity to work and public transit options when looking for rental homes in Atlanta. 

What are the local media outlets?

Atlanta is a major media hub for the state and the region. Publications include the Atlanta Daily World and the Atlanta Business Chronicle. You'll hear WCNN, "The Fan" for sports on the radio. Cumulus Media, which owns iHeartRadio and many radio stations around the US, is headquartered in Atlanta. You can get local news and  Atlanta's WSB-TV Channel 2 and WAGA-TV. The national news station CNN is also headquartered here.

Take in more recent history while spending the day at The Centennial Olympic Park, a 24-acre park and recreation area built for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, or sign up for a Civil War tour to visit and learn about various historic sites around the city.

What is there to do around Atlanta?

Nature lovers rejoice. The city is home to Zoo Atlanta, the Georgia Aquarium, Fenbank Natural Museum, the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, and many public parks and trails. Or catch a show at the Broadway-esque Ford Theatre, built in 1929 and inspired by Egyptian architecture. If you're looking for a more hands-on experience, visit the open-air Ponce City Market or take one of the many food, drink, and entertainment tours around the city. And you'll probably want to get a season pass to Six Flags Over Georgia.

Any annual festivals or Atlanta events to know?

Whatever your music preference, you'll find festivals dedicated to hip-hop, rock, indie, EDM, jazz, bluegrass, and more. The Shaky Knees Music Festival happens every May and brings in musical and other artists from all over the country. In June, locals gather for a spooky music tradition as bands play at Oakland Cemetary. In August, you won't want to miss the BBQ and Bluegrass Festival.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Looking for a weekend getaway near Atlanta, The Great Smoky Mountains are just 3.5 hours north. There, you can spend the day hiking, camping, boating, or screaming your lungs out on a rollercoaster at Dollywood. Just 2 hours away, Chattanooga makes a great day trip with the Ruby Falls cave experience and the Chattanooga Choo Choo. In the other direction, you're only a 3-hour drive from the Atlantic Coast. Spend your days on a public beach at Hilton Head Island or take in the historic architecture and Savannah.

Where is the best place to move in Atlanta?

Choosing apartments or homes for rent in Atlantic Station and Brookwood in Northwest Atlanta are prime choices for easy Interstate and commuter train access to downtown, ample nightlife, and excellent school systems. As densely urban areas, they're both very walkable with everything you need for daily life. If you're looking for Atlanta rentals if you are seeking a neighborhood with a more suburban feel, you might consider a Candler Park rental in the northeast.

Really like the city of Atlanta. The trees everywhere are quite beautiful and there is always plenty to do. The traffic can be a bit rough some times, but overall a great city.
