Tired of spending every St. Patty's Day in your apartment, donning a Leprechaun hat and listening to The Pogues Greatest Hits on repeat? While most bars celebrate the holiday with all of the subtlety of an Irish Spring commercial, Mother Egan's Irish Pub is so spot-on legit that you half expect to see Bono sitting at the bar...and that...s on an off night. When it comes to an Irish pub, the only real question that matters is do they have Guinness on tap? A resounding "yes!" is all you need to know at the good Mother's, with sister ale Smithwick's also available for those that are still afraid of the dark. Traditional Irish fare is also in abundance and good enough to make you forget those less-than-favorable cuisine stereotypes (i.e. nothing but potatoes!). Give the Shepard's Pie a go, or if you're feeling especially green shoot for the traditional corned beef and cabbage. For the adventurous we recommend the Irish breakfast (served at any time of the day), which comes complete with bangers, sunny side up eggs, baked beans, Irish soda bread and, you guessed it, blood pudding. Musical stylings tend to lean, predictably, towards the roots-rock end of things, although larger stars such as G. Love have swung by to perform surprise guest sets. And Tuesday night is the place to be, as Austin's pop culture trivia elite converge for what many consider to be the city's premier battle of the facts. Be prepared for a battle though, as these trivia-hungry Irish never quit.
