The amount of Tex-Mex restaurants in the Austin area that are literally steps away from any apartment community can lead to sensory overload in a very short amount of time. The casual fan may find themselves asking, “why the brand loyalty? Isn’t a taco just a taco?” Given the speed at which relative newcomer Torchy’s Tacos is expanding, true fans of the stuffed tortilla are sure to respond with a hearty “heck no!” A large part of Torchy’s appeal is its casual yet quality tone. It is, quite literally, a taco stand - while a dozen or so seats accompany the front yard / dining area, Torchy’s is a dish best served on the go. The ‘easy-in, easy-out’ counter format (not to mention the affordability) make it a perfect pit stop before that next apartment-hosted ‘big game’ football party. Why stick to wings when you can root on the Longhorns while devouring a green chili pork taco? While drawing a good crowd almost any time of the day, Torchy’s devilish logo is a virtual beacon for the late night sect. Breakfast is thus served all the time, and revelers can build their own bacon-egg-jalapeno-sausage-hold-the-potato taco for a mere $2. Chips and a variety of salsa are available, but given the eatery’s namesake the focus is, rightly so, upon tacos. Prices run from $3-4 for such tempting fare as the Baja shrimp taco (hand battered and highly recommended), the fried avacado taco (proving that vegetarians can also have high cholesterol counts) or the ‘trailer park’ (fried chicken and queso?!). Feeling brave? Top it all off with a deep fried chocolate chip cookie. So the choice is simple…get off the couch in your apartment…get the hunger for some rockin’ tacos…and head for the perfect destination that the college crowd.
