There are few other places in town that match the natural and artistic beauty of this thoroughfare, full of luscious greenery, sculptuary, and memorials that simply must be seen to be belived. Though the road had been in operation for years before, the creation of the Commonwealth Avenue Mall first occurred in 1865. In addition to these statues, the avenue is also home to a several memorials, including the Boston Women's Memorial, which features sculptures of Abigail Adams, Lucy Stone and Phillis Wheatley; and the Vendrome Memorial, dedicated to the firefighters who lost their lives in Hotel Vendrome fire in 1972.
