Yum. Yum. In the North End of Boston is a small pastry shop, Modern Pastry, that offers only the best in cannolis and cupcakes, cookies and truffles, and has a huge list of Specialty Cakes for any occasion. The bakery has been around over 70 years, and the freshness of the products make it the best dessert destination in the North End. A few mouth-watering varieties are the Baked Amaretto Cake with creamy vanilla custard and apricot preserves, the Bomba made by placing two layers of delicious ricotta cheese sprinkled with dark chocolate chips in between three rum soaked layers of sponge cake, and the classic tiramisu, a sweetened espresso sponge cake with custard creme and whipped cream. Rum cake, espresso cake, and pistachio cake make the list as well, in addition to numerous concoctions of cheesecakes and mousses. And if that's not enough to tempt you, Modern Pastry offers the finest in freshly baked cookies, to eat in the shop or to take in three or five pound trays to share with your apartment buddies, or not. Of course, you'll find oatmeal, chocolate chip, butter and macaroon cookies, but the Italian flair of the shop also features various varieties of biscotti, pignoli and seeded cookies. To round out the shop, truffles and terrone, a nougat candy, are offered in several choices such as chocolate, white chocolate and peanut butter. Enjoy the treats right in the place or take them home to your Boston apartments, along with some of the imported Italian coffee for sale there.
