Jamaica Plain Overview

Located in Suffolk County, Jamaica Plain, MA, is one of the best places to live, according to niche.com. It features a wide selection of coffee shops, restaurants and parks. Its proximity to the Greater Boston area is also a huge plus. The area has a younger demographic and, therefore, Jamaica Plain apartments are a hot commodity. This is also a great place for young professionals looking for highly rated schools. Jamaica Plain is located within Boston and doesn't have its own political governance. That tends to make its boundaries somewhat amorphous. Perhaps that's why, when you look it up in the US Census, the result comes back with stats for Boston. However, other sources put the population of this town that's not a town at around 41,000.

What is the history of Jamaica Plain?

First settled in 1630, Jamaica Plain has a storied history. Claims about how the town got its name vary, depending on who you ask. The most colorful story has the town named after plain Jamaican rum. The community became part of Roxbury, which was built around it, and succeeded as part of West Roxbury in 1851. Later, when West Roxbury became part of Boston in 1874, Jamaica Plain gained the distinction of being part of the state capital. In the 19th century, Jamaica Plain was one of the first suburbs to have its own streetcar. One of the main thoroughfares, Dedham Road, the forerunner of Centre Street, dates back to 1663 and connects Boston and Providence. Nestled in a deeply wooded area, and surrounding a beautiful pond, Jamaica Plain became the site for several country estates for the Boston elite. However, the town remained relatively isolated, with the first public coach opening in 1773. Since the 1920s, the area has been known for its factories, producing twine, musical instruments, surveyors’ instruments, automobiles, and eyeglass cases, and there was even a milk bottling plant. Today, Harvard University, MIT, Hubspot and Fidelity Investments are among the diverse businesses or educational facilities with properties in Jamaica Plain.

How is the weather in Jamaica Plain?

Despite the Boston area’s bad rap for inclement weather, the sun shines over Jamaica Plain about 201 days out of the year. Those who like warm weather, but not too warm, would still be comfortable in the city in July when highs reach a moderate 83 degrees. Winter lows in January reach a bone-chilling 19 degrees. With 49 inches of snow and 47 inches of rain falling annually, those with apartments in Jamaica Plain should carry an umbrella with them and invest in a good raincoat.

How do I get around town?

Most people living in Jamaica Plain will need a car to run errands and get back and forth to work. Some parts of Jamaica Plain, such as South Huntington Ave, have moderate walk scores of 69. So, living in these areas might be a priority for those who would rather walk than hop in a car to go to the grocery store or grab a latte. The unincorporated community is about 8 miles or 22 minutes from Logan International Airport in Boston. Buses 39, 41 and SL5 go through the city, as does the subway's orange line and the train's Needham route.

What is the Jamaica Plain commute like?

According to Boston.gov, 42% of Jamaica Plain residents commute to work and drive an average of 30 minutes. For those new to the area, major roadways within the city include Center St, Jamaicaway, which was formerly known as US-1, Washington Street, the arborway or MA 203, and South Huntington Ave.

What are the local media outlets?

Local print media includes the Jamaica Plain Gazette and Jamaica Plain News, which can help keep apartment dwellers and other residents up to date on local happenings. Many residents also get the Boston Globe or other national newspapers delivered to their doors. Radio stations from just a few miles away in Boston and Cambridge pipe in a variety of music genres to keep Jamaica Plain residents inspired throughout the day. Finally, television stations near Jamaica Plain include a PBS station that broadcasts out of Boston and ABC and CBS affiliates also located in Boston.

Why live in Jamaica Plain, MA?

For those living in apartments in Jamaica Plain, or JP as residents call it, there are many historical and cultural venues to explore. Among other notable residents, poet Sylvia Plath called Jamaica Plain home. The city of Boston is known for its beautiful parks, dubbed the city's Emerald Necklace, and four of the city's parks lie within JP’s city limits. Living in Jamaica Plain provides a mix of suburban and urban life that locals crave. When it comes to exploring parks, bars, restaurants and walking back into history, this is the place to be — and you can do it all on the same day!

What Jamaica Plain landmarks should I see?

Both Harvard and MIT have a presence in Jamaica Plain. Jamaica Pond, for which the city was named, is a local landmark as is Loring Greenough House and the Hunnewell Visitor’s Center. There are also many museums and government sites within the city of Boston, and Jamaica Plain is in the center of it all.

What is there to do around Jamaica Plain?

Residents and tourists can enjoy a tour of Loring-Greenough house, a surviving 18th-century house located in Sumner Hill. Sam Adams Brewery is also a notable venue to check out. The Footlight Club is the oldest community theater and worth an evening out. The Franklin Park Zoo is a great place for new apartment renters to adopt a pet, and there are plenty of other things to do and see in and around Jamaica Plain.

Any annual festivals or Jamaica Plain events to know?

Although many of the music festivals available to Jamaica Plain residents involve a short trip to Boston, there are some annual events that residents shouldn't miss. For example, the Jamaica Pond Lantern Parade celebrates Dutch cultural food and started in 1984. The Jamaica Plain Music Festival is a music venue that hosts some of today's top artists. There's even a Donna Summer Disco Party to check out.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

It used to take the local stagecoach four hours with no luggage to travel from Jamaica Plain to Providence RI. Today you can drive there in about an hour. It's a great getaway for those who want a change-up from urban and suburban living. Residents looking for something unique to do can play tourists in Boston for the day. There are several walking trails that take participants past historic sites, some of which are marked simply by a plaque on the sidewalk. Get to know the city and get in a little exercise at the same time.

Where is the best place to move in Jamaica Plain?

Even though Jamaica Plain only measures 4.4 square miles, there are so many great neighborhoods to check out. If you're looking for an apartment and can afford to live there, Hyde Park is home to the Latin Quarter and uniquely located to offer great restaurants and other amenities within walking distance and otherwise. Other great neighborhoods in JP include the Brewery District, for those who appreciate the pub scene, and Brookside and Central Jamaica Plain for those more interested in posher amenities. Come explore Jamaica Plain for yourself to determine which area you would like to rent and live in.
