When you're looking to eat natural and healthy, Charleston apartment-ites should eat at The Fig, an intimate neighborhood bistro serving a "seasonally inspired menu." With produce from local growers and all natural, hormone and antibiotic free meats and proteins, this restaurant will take you from the unhealthy fast food you might be eating to a wonderland of well being. The Fig is unpretentious in its décor, with wooden chairs and tables, earth tones and splashes of color created by bright floral arrangements. The friendly and warm service meshes well with the environment, with a staff that is educated on food and wine. A visit to this atmosphere is a nice getaway from your Charleston apartment. Both soups and salads are served at The Fig, in addition to hot and cool appetizers. A few highlights are the warm salad of shrimp and radicchio, the warm sweet onion tart, and the Keegan-Filion Farms Chicken Liver Pate. The entrees are beautifully prepared and include veal sweetbreads and breast, a Strube Ranch Wagyu bistro steak, or on the seafood side, you may choose from a short menu of sautéed jumbo flounder, fish stew, wild strapped bass, or pancetta wrapped grouper. Alongside your tender meat or seafood will be a veggie sauce or veggie, but additional sides may be ordered for the table, such as pan roasted cauliflower, puree of Yukon Gold potatoes or a sautéed seasonal vegetable. Make sure you call the restaurant to make sure one of the items above is still on the menu, as the change in the season of a particular ingredient may adapt the menu items. The finale to the meal is my favorite, as it is to many Charleston apartment-ites and The Fig is no exception, with an incredible dessert selection. The Molten chocolate cake served with pistachio ice cream is divine, as is the banana tarte - tatin, with peanut butter ice cream. They make their ice cream in house, and daily flavors are available. The Fig serves dinner from 6 pm to 11 pm Monday through Thursday, and from 6 pm to midnight Friday and Saturday. Appetizers are under $10, and entrees cost about $20 each. A beautiful selection of red and white wines from around the world are offered, and a full bar can make available to you anything from a straight liquor to an exotic mixed drink.
