Explore Charlotte
History-loving residents of apartments in Charlotte will love the Levine Museum of The South, Charlotte's main and premier museum. It's right on E 7th St, in the First Ward neighborhood, and features a steady rotation of themed exhibits. Its permanent exhibit is "Cottonfields to Skyscrapers", a detailed look at the history of civil rights in NC and which includes interactive exhibits, such as walk-through Civil War-era store recreations, different types of cotton to sample, educational videos and written messages on racial equality from visiting children. Aside from this, their other exhibits focus on post Civil-War history, including music, segregation and automobile history. Also on-site is the museum store, offering everything from exhibit-related souvenirs, cookbooks, art replicas and ornamental gifts that would look great in any apartment. There's also a considerable library of history books related to the New South, and there are several community events, including a regular African-American Trivia Bowl involving local schools. Admission to the museum is $6 for adults and $5 for children and seniors, and it's open until 5pm year-round. The museum is self-guided, but the people who work there are very knowledgeable about each installation if you have any questions.
