Everybody knows that Chicago is the home of the blues, but it's easy to get lost in the shuffle of hype while trying to find the real deal in a sea of wanna-be heirs to the throne of the greats. Where can an apartment-ite go to get the cream of the bluesy crop, a place where not only celebrities in the know flock to, but a juke joint run almost exclusively by musicians? Here's a secret, kid - hit the Kingston Mines. For years, the Mines have aptly been the place to see both rising underground stars as well as the occasional national headliner of the blues touring circuit. Regularly crowded but rarely claustrophobia-inducing, the setup includes two full stages in adjoining rooms, large comfortable booths, and a menu that reflects the clientel perfectly (barbeque birs or seasoned catfish anyone?). These Mines are truly all about the music, of course, and such auditory gold as saxophonist A.C. Reed and guitar virtuoso Eddy Clearwater can regularly be found rocking the weekend sets. Odds are good that celebrity look-alike is not actually a look-alike at all, as the hippest of hipsters flock to the Mines on a regular basis, and the club's virtually-exclusive late night license allows the drinks and the beats to keep flowing until 4 a.m. seven nights a week. Dig it, daddy-o.
