Cleveland has a long history in the northern United States that is worth preserving. The Western Reserve Historical Society has done that by creating a not-for-profit educational institution that preserves and uses its collections, historic sites, and museums to inspire people to explore the history and culture of Northeastern Ohio. It's a place that puts regional experience within the larger context of state, national, and global history with a collection of museums to show off that history. The Western Reserve includes much of northeastern Ohio and was included in an acquisition of land by Connecticut in 1786 and was sold off to investors beginning in 1796. A huge amount of historic materials have been collected over the over 200 years, and can take many forms, including but not limited to books, personal documents business records, photographs, clothing and domestic textiles, tools, fine and decorative arts, furniture and domestic artifacts made or used in the Western Reserve. These items are displayed at the History Museum that includes the Hay-McKinney and the Bingham-Hanna Houses, the two Italian Renaissance-style buildings that were built in the early 20th century as homes for wealthy and influential Clevelanders. While some of the original architecture was altered, the homes are impressive, and the Bingham-Hanna home still features original sofas and lamps on the first floor. The style is there, however, and they are decorated with pieces of furniture and art from that time period, and from the Western Reserve. The museum itself features a number of revolving local exhibits including recent exhibits of Up Close and Personal with World War II; Building America's Canals, including journals, letters, account books and newspapers from the time that describe the procedure, and Treasures, 150 artifacts gathered over the past 140 years that describe the people, events, and movements that shaped the history of Cleveland, the Western Reserve, the State of Ohio and our country. My favorite section has to be the Chisholm Halle Costume Wing, which presents over 30,000 garments from the late 1700s to the present. If only we could take them home to our Cleveland apartment and play dress-up! The History Museum and the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum is open Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm and the Library/Archives & Genealogy Center is open Thursday - Saturday 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. Admission is a bargain deal because it includes entry to the History Museum, the Library and the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum for $8.50 for adults, $7.50 for seniors, and youth's 17 and under are only $5. The fee to park in the museum lot is $5. If you're a Cleveland apartment-ite who would like to become a member of the WRHS, admission is free. See the website or visit the information center for details.
