Dayton Overview

Thinking of moving to a city with a low cost of living? That’s one of the top reasons to consider Dayton rentals! This Ohio city is a great place to live — whether you’re moving for work or higher education. You’ll find plenty of amenities here` including places to dine` shop` and have fun! Dayton also has several parks` rivers` and green spaces to enjoy the outdoors. As a resident` you’ll be just an hour’s drive north of Cincinnati and west of Columbus. Indianapolis` Cleveland` and other cities and towns are within a few hours for weekend trips. Let’s take a deep dive into everything Dayton has to offer!

What is the history of Dayton?

You might know Dayton as the Birthplace of Aviation thanks to the Wright Brothers. But did you know that it was once an international port city? During the early 1800s` the Miami-Erie Canal gave the city this distinction for over a decade. But Dayton’s history goes back further than this. Settlers first arrived in this part of the Miami Valley in 1796. In 1805` Dayton officially became a city — just 2 years after Ohio became a state! The railroad helped the city expand in terms of population and trade during the latter half of the 19th century. Dayton’s own Wright Brothers introduced aviation in the early 1900s — making the city a world-famous place!

How is the weather in Dayton?

Do you love mild summers that don’t get too hot and humid? Dayton’s summer highs are usually in the mid 80s. Lows tend to be in the 60s. That gives you an entire season of good weather for enjoying the area’s outdoor amenities! Fall and spring also have mild weather` with highs ranging from the 50s to 70s and lows in the 40s and 50s. Winters in Dayton typically have daytime temps in the 30s and lows in the 20s — so you’ll need to bundle up! The city gets a couple feet of snow each winter on average. You can expect many days of sunshine. But the city does get some rainy weather` usually during spring and summer.

How do I get around town?

Do you need a car if you’re considering looking into rental homes in Dayton? Having one as a resident of the outer suburbs and edges of town does offer more convenience. But if you live in or close to downtown` you might have an easier time getting around via public transportation. The Miami Valley Regional Transit Authority (RTA) runs buses through downtown and other parts of the city. You can also take electric trolleys to get around town. What about traveling outside Dayton? There’s a Greyhound Bus Station in the northwestern part of town. Dayton International Airport in the northern part of the city offers flights to many destinations within the U.S. and other countries.

What is the Dayton commute like?

Your commute as a Dayton resident will end up depending on where you live and work or go to school. But the average commute time in the city is 26 minutes. Homes for rent in Dayton that are near major roadways may help reduce this. There’s I-75 running north-south through the center of town and I-70 running east-west in the northern part of the city. I-675 runs north-south just to the east of Dayton. And there’s U.S. Route 35 running east-west in the central part of town. These roads give you plenty of ways to get around quickly — except during rush hour!

Why live in Dayton, OH?

Are you planning to attend college here? Or are you looking for work? Wright State University` the University of Dayton` and other higher education institutions are located here. Major employers in education` healthcare` and the aerospace industries are also here. Living in Dayton rental homes means you have easy access to a lively arts scene` tons of events and festivals throughout the year — and much more! The city’s low cost of living makes it easy to do more with your money. And you’ll have plenty of options for enjoying your leisure time` with riverside parks` museums` theaters` and other attractions.

What Dayton landmarks should I see?

Being in Dayton year-round means you have lots of time to see the city’s landmarks. But which should you put at the top of your list? Visit Carillon Historical Park to learn more about the city’s history at this open-air museum that covers 65 acres. Head to the Patterson Homestead to visit a home that dates back to the early to mid-1800s. Step back in time for food and drinks at Carillon Brewing Company — a brewery that’s been in operation since the 1850s. Visit Hawthorn Hill to tour Orville Wright’s last home. The home has had plenty of famous visitors over the years` including Thomas Edison and Henry Ford!

What is there to do around Dayton?

As the city where aviation got its start` Dayton has several related attractions. Some of these include the Wright Brothers Memorial` National Museum of the U.S. Air Force` National Aviation Hall of Fame` and Huffman Prairie Flying Field — the site where the Wright Brothers practiced flying. Spend pleasant days exploring the city’s MetroParks` featuring nature trails` bike paths — and other outdoor recreation! Make plans to attend Dayton’s many festivals and celebrations` like Summer in the City` the Dayton Holiday Festival` and First Friday. Check out the Dayton Ale Trail to sample locally brewed beer!

Where is the best place to move in Dayton?

You can find Dayton homes for rent in nearly every part of the city. But which neighborhood is right for you? The downtown area puts you right near tons of restaurants` stores` the Miami River` and other amenities. Webster Station` just east of downtown` is close to MetroParks and Mad River. Looking for a historical area? Oregon Historic District is filled with older homes` including Queen Anne and Greek Revival houses. Five Oaks offers a suburban feel — while also being close to downtown!
